WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 20: Aquatic<br> -&gt; Olrog's Gull<br> <br> It's the last day of <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> and you knew my last pick had to be a gull, right?<br> <br> May I introduce to you: Olrog's gull! It is named after 20th century Swedish ornithologist Claës Christian Olrog who worked in Argentina, where most of the Olrog's gull population lives.<br> <br> This bird has an oddly specific range: it can be found between 38.49° and 45.11°S, mostly in and around Bahía Blanca, an Argentinian city by the Atlantic. <br> <br> Unfortunately, Olrog's gulls are classified as "Near Threatened" due to loss of habitat.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> Their name in their native range is "gaviota cangrejera" which translates to crab-eater gull. This is because their main diet consists of three different species of crabs, namely Chasmagnathus granulata, Cyrtograpsus altimanus, and Cyrtograpsus angulatus.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/olrogsgull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#olrogsgull</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 19: Long Range<br> -&gt; Arctic Tern<br> <br> Have you ever thought about the circle of life and rebirth and such? Have you ever thought about which animal (or other creature) you would like to be reborn as? I have, but I've never really found an answer, until today. In my next life, I want to be an arctic tern please!<br> <br> Why, you ask? Let me explain:<br> The arctic tern is famous for its migration (thus my choice for the "long range" prompt). Each and every year, it flies from its breeding grounds in the Arctic (hence the name "arctic tern" to the Antarctic - and back again! <br> <br> Just to make it clear how impressive that is: The shortest (!) distance between these two regions is 19,000km / 12,000mi! That is over 452 marathons!<br> <br> This means that these birds see not one, but two summers every year - and thus they see more daylight than any (!) other creature on this planet. Imagine: Two whole summers instead of the two sunny wednesdays we usually get (in Germany at least)! This could be us! Me and who? 👉👈<br> <br> Studies have shown that the remarkable flight of the arctic tern has even been underestimated for ages! That is because these birds do not fly in a straight line, thus taking the most direct route to their destination, but rather fly according to prevailing winds which they take advantage of. So, some birds fly up to 81,600km / 50,700mi per year. <br> <br> The average lifespan of the arctic tern is about 30 years. This means that it travels about 2.4 million km / 1.5 million miles during its life - the equivalent of more than three round-trips from Earth to Moon. Now tell me, how frickin' awesome is that?! 😍<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> The arctic tern has been featured on postal stamps of several countries, including Canada, Cuba, Finland, and Iceland, as well as territories such as Åland, Alderney, and Faroe Islands.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/tern?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#tern</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/terns?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#terns</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/arctictern?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#arctictern</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/arcticterns?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#arcticterns</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 17: Parking Lot<br> -&gt; Ring-Billed Gull<br> <br> The prompt is "parking lot birds", does anyone think of anything other than seagulls?!<br> <br> I chose the ring-billed gull, a beautiful, fierce and strong-willed birb who is even found in parking lots or other places where humans possibly lose food (and the definition of "lose" is quite loose here, because sometimes it simply means that these birbs will snatch your snack right out of your hand :D). <br> <br> Their diet usually includes fish, invertebrates, snails and even carrion, but these not-at-all-shy birds have come closer and closer to cities over the years and can now be observed chasing kids with ice cream cones, snatching fish burgers out of unsuspecting tourists' hands or even robbing gas stations and taking bags of crisps. They want it, they take it - I love them so much! 😍<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> In the 19th century, the ring-billed gull was frequently hunted for its plumage. Fortunately, the population has since rebounded and it is now not only the most common gull in North America, but also the third most common bird worldwide with an estimated population of 1.2 billion birds.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/ringbilledgull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ringbilledgull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/ringbilledgulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ringbilledgulls</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 16: Backyard<br> -&gt; Baltimore Oriole<br> <br> The 4th and final week of <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> has started! And the first prompt I tackled was "backyard".<br> <br> Granted, I will never see one of these beauties in my backyard, but since I have already drawn every German backyard birb at least once, I looked on and eventually landed (ha!) on this one.<br> <br> Baltimore orioles are quite common in North America, where they live in the Nearctic during summer and migrate to winter in the Neotropics. <br> <br> Because of their beautiful colour and song, people grew very fond of them and arranged special oriole feeders in their backyards; orioles discovered those and lead their young ones there, resulting in them becoming popular backyard birbs.<br> <br> They mainly feed on fruit and nectar, but unlike other fruit-eating birbs, they prefer very ripe fruit, picking only the darkest and juciest berries for example. They also like to mlem on halved oranges and have been observed to be fond of grape jelly. So, if you live near them and want to attract them, you know what to do. :D<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> The Baltimore oriole gets its name from 17th century Lord Baltimore. Their colours match those of Lord Baltimore's coat-of-arms, hence the name. Today, it is the state birb of Maryland and namesake and mascot for the Maryland Baltimores, a baseball team.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/oriole?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#oriole</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/orioles?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#orioles</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/baltimoreoriole?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#baltimoreoriole</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/maryland?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#maryland</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 15: Climb<br> -&gt; Yellow-Fronted Woodpecker<br> <br> This colourful fella can be found in South America and lives in (sub-)tropical forests. <br> <br> It's a very social bird; several families breed together and help each other watching the fledglings or foraging for food. They also like calling a lot and have several different calls for different situations. As most woodpeckers, they also like to, well, peck on wood.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> As I mentioned earlier, they inhabit forests; but since more and more woodland is replaced, the woodpeckers have adapted and now inhabit sugar cane plantations and orchards.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bitb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bitb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/woodpecker?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodpecker</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/woodpeckers?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodpeckers</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/yellowfrontedwoodpecker?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#yellowfrontedwoodpecker</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 14: Hop<br> -&gt; Rockhopper Penguin<br> <br> Rockhopper penguins are three kinds of crested penguins who live near rocky shores and breed in tall tussock grass. They are generally on the smaller side with a body length of up to 50cm (half a blahaj). Males and females look the same, so a DNA test would be needed to determine a rockhopper penguin's sex.<br> <br> Even though they look somewhat similar because of their magnificent yellow crest, rockhopper penguins are not to be confused with macaroni penguins.<br> <br> Rockhopper penguins feed on every small thing they find in the ocean. They are really good divers and can dive up to 100m (330ft) for several minutes while hunting. <br> <br> Unfortunately, their numbers have declined drastically over the last decades, the reason being, you guessed it, humans. Commercial overfishing, oil spillings, polution and climate change all contribute to the depletion of the rockhopper penguin's food supply and thus to the decrease of their numbers. <br> <br> FUN FACT<br> There are three subspecies of the rockhopper penguin: the Southern, Eastern, and Northern rockhopper penguin. The funny thing is though, experts are still fighting over how to categorize them. Some consider all three of them to be distinct species, some consider only the Northern rockhopper penguin as a distinct species and others think they are all just the same species. No consensus has been reached thus far. <br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/penguin?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#penguin</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/penguins?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#penguins</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/rockhopperpenguin?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#rockhopperpenguin</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/rockhopperpenguins?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#rockhopperpenguins</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 12: Busy<br> -&gt; Spotted Towhee<br> <br> Meet the spotted towhee, a really cool birb! It is a New World Sparrow whose taxonomy has been debated quite recently. It was only in 1995 that the spotted towhee and the eastern towhee were considered two separate species. <br> <br> They are about the size of robins and has characteristic white spots on its rufous sides - which the eastern towhee does not have by the way.<br> <br> These birbs lay at least (!) two broods, consisting of three to five eggs, per season. Once their fledglings have hatched, males will forage noisly and busily to feed them, while females stay in the nest to protect the family. After just 10 to 12 days, the young birbs leave the nest to go on their merry way.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> These birbs live in regions often affected by forest fires (not fun) and thrive in areas recovering from forest fires due to their excellent ground foraging abilities. They are also found on Socorro Island, a volcanic island near Mexico; the specimen living there tend to be much smaller than other spotted towhees, hence they are sometimes treated as their own species, the Socorro Towhee.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/towhee?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#towhee</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/towhees?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#towhees</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/spottedtowhee?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#spottedtowhee</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 11: Flock<br> -&gt; Mediterranean Gull<br> <br> We're already starting week 3 of <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> and this week's theme is "behaviour"!<br> <br> When I read "flock", gulls immediately come to mind (although, to be fair, gulls come to my mind all the time anyway). They are very social birbs and like to live in large colonies.<br> <br> The mediterranean gull is a slightly larger and more robust gull with a heavier beak and stronger legs than, for example, the black-headed gull. <br> <br> They used to live only around the Black Sea, which is actually not an ocean, but a mediterranean lake between Europe and Asia. I'm sure most of you know that, although they are often called "seagulls", lots of gull species don't live near the ocean. <br> <br> Today, mediterranean gulls are found throughout Europe, including Great Britain and Ireland, some Scandinavian countries and the Balkans. <br> <br> FUN FACT<br> Gulls can be confusing anyway, because many species look very similar to one another. Their German names make it even more confusing: The Mediterranean Gull is called "Schwarzkopfmöwe" in German, which literally translates to "black-headed gull". However, the Black-Headed Gull is another gull species and their German name is "Lachmöwe" ("laughing gull"). These two are not the same though, in fact, they aren't even in the same genus of gulls! The mediterranean gull belongs to the Ichthyaetis genus while the black-headed gull belongs to the Chroicocephalus genus. WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 10: Tiny<br> -&gt; Weebill<br> <br> The weebill is Australia's tiniest birb. With a body length of only 10cm (3.1-3.5in), it is just as long as your average playing card. It's t i n y!<br> <br> It is found throughout Mainland Australia (except Tansania) in woodlands. There are four subspecies and their plumage varies slightly in colour; the more tropical the region they inhabit, the more yellowish their feathers are. <br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/tinybirds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#tinybirds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/weebills?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#weebills</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/weebill?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#weebill</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 9: Huge<br> -&gt; Marabou Stork<br> <br> When I read the prompt for this one, the Marabou Stork immediately came to mind, because this bird is H U G E (for a bird, of course). They can reach a height of up to 152cm (5 feet), which is almost as tall as me! And with a weight of 9kg (20lb), it would not be super easy to lift one of those (for me at least (not that I wanted to (you know what I mean ...)))<br> <br> Their conservation status is currently "least concern", but don't let that fool you. In some countries and regions, they are quite threatened indeed. Even though they have few natural enemies due to their enormous size, their biggest threat is, you guessed it, humans. The marabou stork's feathers are used in fashion (like, come on (nowadays, they are sometimes replaced by turkey feathers, which, not really better)) and for traditional medicine. <br> <br> FUN FACT<br> When seen from behind, the marabou stork looks like a figure with skinny white legs and a large black cloak; that's why it's also called the "undertaker" bird. I would love one of these beauties to be my ferryman to the underworld, not gonna lie!<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/maraboustork?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#maraboustork</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 8: Long<br> -&gt; Whooping Crane<br> <br> Have you played the game "Pikmin"? If so, does this crane give you strong Snagret vibes too?! I can picture the whooping crane snacking on my defenseless white pikmin :(<br> <br> All jokes aside, the whooping crane is a super cool and majestic birb who we should pay more attention to - they're endangered. After their population dropped to just around 20 cranes in total in the 1940s, efforts were made to help them rise and shine again. The efforts were somewhat successful, but still, there's only around 800 whooping cranes on Earth today.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> Their German name is "Schreikranich", literally "screaming crane" - you know what that means. WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 7: Short<br> -&gt; Gould's Shortwing<br> <br> This very cute birb was named after English ornithologist John Gould, who first formally described it in 1868. <br> <br> It is quite a small bird: With only 12-13cm or 4.7-5.1in, it is slightly smaller than your average ruler. <br> <br> You can find these cuties in the Himalayas, northern parts of Myanmar and Vietnam and, last but not least, in the Chinese province of Yunnan. That's why I chose the Yulan Magnolia (玉兰花) as a background - it is one of Yunnan's famous "eight flowers" and stands for perseverance and elegance.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> Gould's Shortwing is the only birb in the genus Heteroxenicus and we still have a lot to learn about it. For example, we still know nothing about their nests and eggs.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gouldsshortwing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gouldsshortwing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/magnolia?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#magnolia</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 6: Slender<br> -&gt; Slender-Billed Gull<br> <br> And without further ado, we enter week 2 of <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a>, and this week's theme is shape/size. I bet y'all have been ea-gull-y (🥁) awaiting the first gull of the month, ha!<br> <br> So here it is, the slender-billed gull. This absolute beauty lives in the Mediterranean area on islands and coastal lagoons. <br> <br> Slightly taller and definitely more long-necked than similar species of gulls, the slender-billed gull appears more, well, slender. Young birbs have dark tips on their wings, which disappear after they reach maturity at the age of 2. <br> <br> FUN FACT<br> This gull has a funny way of swimming, as it tends to slope their head and lower their bill while they speed forwards; this allows us to easily distinguish it from other gulls while it's swimming (identifying different species of gulls can be quite hard otherwise). <br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/gulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#gulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagull</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/seagulls?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#seagulls</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/slenderbilledgull?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#slenderbilledgull</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 5: Complementary<br> -&gt; Rufous-Crested Coquette<br> <br> Hi, I hate drawing hummingbirds, that's why I usually choose to draw at least one during art challenges, to, well, challenge myself! Also, this guy's name sounds a bit like "croquette" and I like croquettes, so that's that.<br> <br> So, what does "complementory" mean anyway? Complementary colours, also called "opposite colours" are pairs of colours where the two cancel each other out by producing a greyscale colour. <br> <br> Sounds complicated? Here's how I learned about complementary colours in 5th grade or so:<br> Complementary colours are pairs of primary colours (blue, red, yellow) where one of the primary colours is paired with a mix of the other two. So that leaves us with: <br> Red -&gt; Green<br> Blue -&gt; Orange<br> Yellow -&gt; Purple<br> <br> So I went for red-green with the birb and yellow-purple with the background (a type of flower these birbs like to snack). <br> <br> The rufous-crested coquette is t i n y and very lightweight, even for a hummingbird. That's why they stand no chance against other birbs when fighting for food, so they prefer to live in greater heights or at the outer edges of forests where there are fewer birbs to compete against.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> To this day, no rufous-crested coquette has ever been observed to actually lay an egg, which, fair, give them some privacy, man.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/hummingbird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hummingbird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/hummingbirds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hummingbirds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/coquette?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#coquette</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/coquettes?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#coquettes</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/rufouscrestedcoquette?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#rufouscrestedcoquette</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 4: Camo<br> -&gt; American Bittern<br> <br> Huh, why did I post an empty canvas today? Oh, no no, it's not empty at all! If you look veeery closely, you can see the elusive American Bittern, an expert in camouflage. You've probably never seen one because these bois hide like there's annoying relatives coming over for the holidays.<br> <br> All jokes aside, if you live in Canada or the Northern US, chances are you have come across one of those cuties. It inhabits marshes, lakes and ponds, where it likes to live by itself and to spend its time foraging for fish, crustaceans and insects. <br> <br> Compared to the European Bittern, this fella is slightly smaller and its plumage is speckled, not barred. Its size is just between the regular and the mini blahaj, its weight is about as much as your average pack of flour.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> The American Bittern has obtained many nicknames, including but not limited to: Bog Bumper, Stake Driver, Thunder Pumper, Bog Bull, Bog Thumper, Mire Drum and Water Belcher (which is the nickname I, too, shall claim for myself.)<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bittern?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bittern</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bitterns?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bitterns</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/americanbittern?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#americanbittern</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Prompt 3: multi-coloured<br> -&gt; European Green Woodpecker<br> <br> This was actually one of the first birbs I actively noticed, since they used to hang out at our garden! Otherwise, they are very shy birds, so they are often heard rather than seen. I also remember having to remember the colours and patterns of these birds and then painting them in elementary school.<br> <br> Even though the green woodpecker is, as the name suggests, a woodpecker, it doesn't really engage in the characteristic pecking on trees, it rather snacks ants off the ground. <br> <br> It is quite common in large parts of Europe, while over half the green woodpecker population of Europe is in France and Germany. They are usually found in semi-open landscapes such as grassland, heath, plantations and orchards. The most important thing is that there's plenty of ants to snack. :)<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> The European Green Woodpecker was prominently featured on many stamps of several countries, hence the choice of today's background.<br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/woodpecker?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodpecker</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/woodpeckers?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#woodpeckers</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/europeangreenwoodpecker?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#europeangreenwoodpecker</a>
WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Day 2: Pied<br> -&gt; Common Loon<br> <br> The common loon, also known as great northern diver, can be found in the Neactic realm, meaning the Northern US and Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Alaska and Bear Island (Norway). <br> <br> As the name suggests, these cuties are great divers and expert fishers. Fish make up about 80% of their diet. They can catch and eat fish roughly 1/3 of their own size, which is pretty impressive! Fortunately, their status is, as of now, "Least Concern", so they are not in threat of extinction any time soon.<br> <br> The common loon appears on a Canadian coin and is also the state bird of Minnesota. It makes a prominent appearance in several Native American tales, where it usually helps the protagonist achieve a goal; in some stories, the world was even created by a loon.<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> Do you know movies in which a wailing bird cry is used to evoke a sense of wilderness and suspense? WonsingtonFEATHRUARY 2025<br> <br> Finally, my favourite birb art challenge <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> has begun! 😍 Stay tuned for 20 birbs, 5 each week, to brighten the dull month of February!<br> <br> Each week has a theme and each day has a prompt where you can choose a fitting birb for yourself. I just love the balance between theme/prompt and freedom that Feathruary gives us!<br> <br> Day 1: Monochrome<br> -&gt; Hawaiian Coot<br> <br> Known as "alae keʻokeʻo" in Hawaiian, this cutie is endemic to Hawai'i and has a lot in common with its "sibling", the American Coot - they are roughly the same size (33-40cm or 13-16in) and the same weight (700g or 1lb9oz). <br> <br> You can encounter the Hawaiian Coot in habitats such as freshwater lakes and marshes, as well as coastal saline lagoons. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, the species is considered "Vulnerable". Measures are being taken to preserve their nesting areas, so let's hope the best for our little feathered friends!<br> <br> FUN FACT<br> When first discovered, the Hawaiian Coot was mistaken for a Eurasian Coot (which, fair, they do look very similar); today, it is regarded as either its own species or a subspecies of the American Coot.<br> <br> <br> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/feathruary2025day1?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#feathruary2025day1</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/bird?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bird</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birds?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birds</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birb?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birb</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birbs?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birbs</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/birdart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#birdart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/digitalart?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#digitalart</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/drawing?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#drawing</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/coot?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#coot</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/coots?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#coots</a> <a href="https://gram.social/discover/tags/hawaiiancoot?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hawaiiancoot</a>
