Dyed some fabric today. It came out a lot lighter than I intended, but it is what it is. It's still nice. The fabric is cotton flannel and jersey. I'll make the jersey into underpants primarily, and the flannel is for the lining of a jacket, though there's enough of both that there will be left over for other projects.

I'm a guy who just does stuff even though I have no formal training in the stuff I do. It's more fun that way...?
For over a decade I've mostly been the stay-at-home parent on Halloween, helping my kid with their costume (or making it entirely), then not having time to make one for myself, and needing to do academic work (every evening, every weekend... ugh) anyway. I've been the parent at the door giving candy to other kids. I haven't gone out in costume for over a decade.
This year I decided, come hell or high water, I was going to make myself a costume. I decided to make a wizard robe, which would also be wearable at burns (e.g., #burningman #regional events).
I took some pics (a few, at least) of the process and, for a change, actually posted them. Here is a reasonably informative build log on imgur.

A couple of years ago, I read an excellent book called "The Fabric of History." In that book, I discovered that Tyrian purple, the snail-based dye used by kings and Roman senators and other snooty historical figures, smelled really horrible. I love thinking about that. #textiles #dye #history

Stanford scientists has found an agent that can reversibly make skin transparent without damaging it. #Tartrazine, a popular yellow-orange food dye called FD&C Yellow 5 is notably used for coloring Doritos. Hong’s team dissolved the dye in an aqueous solution and created a transparency-inducing lotion of sorts. It worked, because the dye reduced the difference in refractive index between water and lipids in the skin.
