John Arnold<p>_The Evening Post_, 27 July 1923:<br> OPTICAL ILLUSIONS<br> An interesting and entertaining lecture on “Illusions” was given before the Wellington Philosophical Society on Wednesday by Professor T. A. Hunter. Before showing a number of illustrations by means of a lantern, the lecturer discussed generally the proneness of the senses to be misled by circumstances of an unusual kind. The sense organs had a long evolutionary history, and had become thoroughly accustomed to reacting in a certain way to certain stimuli. It therefore often happened that the impression obtained from certain outside facts was quite wrongly interpreted. This was the explanation of a great number of optical illusions; but though the illusions were obvious, Professor Hunter said, the theories by which it had been attempted to explain them were far from definite or capable as yet of unification.<br> A number of very striking illustrations were displayed, and with the remarks of the lecturer provided matters for a good discussion and a number of questions.<br><a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19230727.2.143" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/news</span><span class="invisible">papers/EP19230727.2.143</span></a><br>Biography in DNZB <a href="https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/3h47/hunter-thomas-alexander" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/3</span><span class="invisible">h47/hunter-thomas-alexander</span></a><br><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OnThisDay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnThisDay</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OTD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OTD</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PapersPast" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PapersPast</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OpticalIllusions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpticalIllusions</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Lectures" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lectures</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Academics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Academics</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Professors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Professors</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/VictoriaCollege" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VictoriaCollege</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NewZealand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewZealand</span></a></p>
