Below I've outlined as best i can some serious issues that come from the heart. Teachers are trying to do the best they can in impossible situations with inadequate expertise, training and funding.

(1) Criticism of Govt schools.
Someone needs to look at what private schools are doing to support students with disabilities. Or not.
Many are being discriminatory and rejecting autistic and disabled students bc of their needs.

(2) Teacher burn out is a major issue. I have had many times 4-5 high needs students in a class of 25 at a standard govt yr 7-12 school. One year i had 2 autistic students (one with a phobia of paper), another 2 with diff levels of ADHD and 1 who was 15yrs, visually impaired and intellectually aged 10 who needed everything recorded on a device for him to replay and learn at home. There was one aide in class tasked with helping them all as best she could bc not all 5 were receiving funding.

All the 5 students had wonderful parents who advocated for their needs and were attentive caring people. The remaining 20 students also had parents who wanted them to do their best in class.

(3) Workload. Work: home life balance.
I was caught in the middle trying to plan/ deliver / assess / review lessons to my students every day (4 lessons x 25 students) when ALL of my classes had at least 3 students with high needs social, emotional, intellectual or all the above.

Teaching has always been a thankless job but it has become an impossible job.

(4) Data and the future. Someone somewhere somehow has to get to the bottom of WHY we are getting so many diagnoses in recent years.
Then look at HOW we provide for all our students fairly across GOVT AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS. Many of the students need 1to1 tutoring. That's just not possible in a class of 25.

#schools #teaching #schoolfunding #inclusiveEducation #education #teacherburnout
