Image Culte« Patchwork Quilt », 1970, collage (technique mixte papier et tissus) du plasticien afro-américain Romare Bearden.<blockquote>En 1971, Bearden est devenu le deuxième artiste noir à bénéficier d’une exposition personnelle au MoMA. Organisée par le conservateur invité Carroll Greene, cette exposition avait permis au musée de présenter son acquisition récente d’un collage majeur de Bearden, “Patchwork Quilt”, qui a fut reproduit sur la couverture du catalogue. Des amis et des proches étaient présents à ses côtés au vernissage, notamment ses collègues artistes afro-américains Norman Lewis et Ernest Crichlow. Les trois hommes avaient fondé, à New York en 1969, la Cinque Gallery destinée à offrir des possibilités d’exposition et un soutien aux artistes afro-américains émergents.</blockquote>A noter que Romare Bearden, peintre, graveur, lithographe et écrivain, a été formé à l’Art Students League of New York, où George Grosz, l’artiste expressionniste et membre important du mouvement Dada (parti en exil à New-York en 1933), a fait partie de ses professeurs.
