Eudaimon ꙮWow, I've just replaced the USB-C connector part from my partner's <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/fairphone" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Fairphone</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://fe.disroot.org/tag/fp4" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FP4</a> (with a spare part sent for free!), because the phone stopped charging, and voilà, it works! I guess that if this happened to any other phone, it would have died permanently (or I would have had to replace the whole motherboard)! So, even if a Fairphone might be a bit more expensive than another similar phone, just the fact that I've been able to repair it by myself (just by watching one of their excellent tutorials) is as if I'd had cost half the price.<br>This should be he way to go with every piece of hardware: modular, repairable and with clear instruction manuals or tutorials for doing this. Tomi the Slav and 1024 others<p>Why are we so far from a 'circular economy' / why the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/R2R" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>R2R</span></a> (right to repair) doesn't work in real life?<br>A recent experience: <br>I wanted to fix my Bosch dishwasher. It's a small fix (door micro-switch). I couldn't buy the part online (Bosch shop) or contact the official repairman (won't pickup the phone). I could order it If I lived in UK or IE (for 50€), but I'm not. After several hours of research, I found out it is a generic microswitch (for 10€). Finally ordered from Amazon. So many obstacles.</p>

yaygya<p>Today I learned Canada’s parliament is working on Bill C-244, an amendment to the Copyright Act that allows for circumvention of DRM for purposes of repair, whether by yourself or a third-party. This is a general exemption that applies to anything with software locks on it, which is a good thing. Preferably abolish the concept of corporations entirely and democratize them - then no device will be built to be unrepairable and no corporation will seek to take away people's control over their Hardware.</p>

Makes violation unlawful practice enforceable by Commissioner of Bureau of Labor and Industries or by civil action.</p><p>Right now, this bill is in jeopardy. We need people who are willing to speak up to submit testimony in support of this bill because the chuds, fascists, and general pearl clutching liberals are standing in the way and are more worried about their property values than human dignity.
