Here's the horror show at my community garden that I described several days ago. The "tilled" section has been plowed and looks weed free and inviting. But in reality the lawn of common mugwort that was previously there has just been broken up into thousands of little clumps, soon to reestablish in areas of the garden that previously didn't have it. And then, just like in past years, gardeners will abandon their plots because the weeds are too thick and the vegetables can't compete. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #nodig #tilling #plowing #mugwort

No dig gardening beds, some in the process of being made, run down the length of an allotment plot either side of a wood chip central path. Bags of collected wood chip are lying on cardboard with some rolls of wire mesh which will be used to protect a bed from curious muntjac. A couple of reclaimed water tanks will be sunk into the space in between the no dig beds for their new life as ponds.

One muntjac and pigeon protected growing space made from reused wood, wire mesh and netting.

This will probably be for growing broad beans and then brassicas.

A wooden framed bed about 1.2 metres high with black netting over the top and wire mesh around the sides. The bed will be weeded and sown with broad beans and maybe some field beans too. It will have a detachable mesh frame at the far end or a weighed down netted flap.

At my community garden one can choose to be on the tilled side or the non-tilled side. I chose the latter because I can use it year-round (e.g., I sow peas and fava beans in February). But the photos below provide the other big reason: common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). When you have a lawn of this, the very last thing you want to do is plow — every single one of the thousands of rhizome segments will survive and thrive. But that is exactly what will happen this week. I watch in horror every year. #garden #allotment #mugwort #weed #nodig

Starting the #nodig bed. Got some council dirt from the tip. We aren't planting yet, so we just put the weed cover back over the cardboard and the dirt and it looks like we've buried a body. #gardening

Significantly lower effort than traditional methods, for basically the same (or slightly better) output.

Some of the shells are ground up for treats for the red wrigglers in the worm farm 360. The rest of the shells have been added to the compost pile as slow release nutrients. We could do more apple cider vinegar for the garden. We could do more foliar sprays. #Vermiculture, #minnesota, #nodig, #compost, #koreannaturalfarming.

A little more progress on the plot. The hedge clearings have been moved and added to a hűgel bed nearer the shed.

No dig beds of layers of cardboard with organic matter over the top. The front bed is mixed bough stable manure compost and leaf litter. A bed being made behind it has cardboard down and part composted leaf mould collected from footpaths. Bags of wood chip are being used to weight down the cardboard that’s not yet covered with any organic matter.

Summer raspberry beds weeded and thinly mulched with some dark well composted manure and soil. The paths in between the raspberry rows and the main central pathway have been mulched with hawthorn wood chip which is orangey in colour. Wooden posts are at each end of the rows. Pallets of a compost area are in front of an old wooden shed.

Green leafy crops are growing inside a greenhouse. Three paving slabs form a central pathway. The veg grown here are komatsuna, a type of Chinese cabbage, land cress, tatsoi pak choi, some broad beans and ryegrass grown as a green manure to fill the gaps made by the winter harvests.

These now to then photos are about three months apart.

November to February in our temperate UK winter climate.

The overgrowth is now being turned into compost.

An allotment plot with a dried grass mulched raspberry bed in the front, leaf mould mulch behind. Soil excavated from under the central path is mulching the beds either side. The only bought compost is the darker stuff on the right. Every other mulch material has been found for free. A orangey yellow hawthorn wood chip pathway runs down the length of the plot. Most of the no dig beds have been started now. There is a pile of shrub wood on the right with some untamed brambles behind. A boundary hedge runs down the right hand side of the plot. An old wooden shed sits at the bottom of the plot.

More free wood chip. The primary school down the road were having all their hawthorn trees chopped back. I asked the tree surgeons if they could drop it off on the driveway and they were only too happy to do so.

It will be ferried up to the allotments for mulching the pathways on plots. #Gardening #NoDig #Recycling

@Wraeth Home grown garlic is wonderful in the kitchen. It is good that you made it to early February with the 2024 harvest of German extra hardy garlic. It’s an excellent vintage and variety. Fermenting some of the harvest as garlic paste can extend your storage season all around the calendar.
