Reminder: If you're marginalizing ppl bc they're not using alt text, you're being #abelist.

Some ppl who are neurodivergent in a way that makes alt text impossible. You telling them to "just try harder" or excluding then is no diff than telling blind ppl to "look harder" or paraplegics to "just walk.

Stop valuing ppl with #neurodivergent traits as less important than ppl with physical challenges. Haven't we marginalized #neurodivergence enough?

If you didn't know, now you know.

Given the climate in the US, it might be worth considering whether a professional diagnosis is better than a self diagnosis. Weigh up the pros and cons.

I found this list to be useful. Copy it into a word processor or print it off and highlight all the ones you see in yourself. I did that, and got my ex to highlight what he saw in me. Before that I did used to doubt, but seeing that made me realise that I do have a lot of autistic traits (already got fobbed off once when trying for a diagnosis years ago, so I'm trying again).

There's also the raads-r test and a few other good ones on Embrace Autism, and idrlabs.com has a few that give you a cool pie chart. I find the AQ ones to be meh, the questions are too open for interpretation, but my GP required it before he could refer me.

www.autism.org.ukSigns that a child or adult may be autisticThe signs that people notice in children and adults are usually consistent with the core characteristics of autism, but this isn’t always obvious.

The hardest part about unmasking is developing the courage and resilience to act against the interest of another person (usually by upholding a personal boundary you've ignored so far) and to then strike the right balance in determining who deserves an explanation (because they actually want to listen) and who is a lost cause and just wants you to admit that you're wrong.

It's a really odd thing to go through when so far you've tried to please everyone. Who are you to put your judgement over the judgement of other people?

This has me terrified.
I am a parent to an #autistic child with #adhd. She is not broken. She does not have a disease that needs to be cured.
She has a #neurotype that is only recently being acknowledged and accepted.
#neurodivergence need sto stop being seen as "other" or as needing to conform to some arbitrary "normal".
#vaccines save lives. There is 0 link with vaccines and autism. But even if there were, if you'd rather your child have #polio than autism, you shouldn't have kids at all.

Yo Mastodon !

Please join us for this one-day conference on research and practice on #religion, #disability and #neurodivergence (focusing on social scientific research but anyone with an interest is welcome)! Online or in London, UK. Also I am the keynote speaker so don’t make me talk to an empty room. Or do. I’m not sure which is more nerve-wracking just now. (Yes, it’s my first keynote, why do you ask?) britsoc.co.uk/groups/study-gro

This took me a long time to figure out because my task brain works the same way. This includes things like cooking, exercising, etc. You really have to find the -actual- smallest chunk, because:

1. Not all tasks have to be done daily so it's important to separate
2. Writing the list out of tasks should be the first task
3. It's best to keep goals to 5 tasks and no more unless you feel up to it
