We may think of the sea voyage as an allegory of our experience of life, but it is the Captain who is explained to us by images of the unseeing lives of regular people. Conrad invokes abstract notions of the futility of those lives to help us understand the Captain and his actions.

#JosephConrad

d4doome
Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent from 1907 is an important milestone in the development of the spy novel. It's the beginning of the pessimistic, sordid, cynical school of spy fiction. Jonathan Emmesedi
I've been reading Joseph Conrad recently.

I completely understand why the offensive racial epithet in the original title of the novel published in the USA as "Children of the Sea" had to go.

Unfortunately, that offensive epithet is used throughout the work, sometimes ventriloquised, sometimes not. It cannot simply be excised from the text.

As a consequence, "Children of the Sea" is probably impossible to assign to students and difficult to discuss in depth elsewhere.

I would not be surprised therefore if the work slips into oblivion. Such obscurity would be a loss, since Conrad touches on important themes concerning masculinity, solidarity in the face of a hostile nature, and - yes - race. The novel also reveals something about Conrad's political leanings. In addition, Conrad wrote some magnificently evocative prose in his account of the voyage of the Narcissus.

Please don't read this post as an attack on "wokery" or "snowflakes". Sometimes quashing the circulation of hateful racist language matters more than literary discussion, so I would not want to struggle to prevent this book sliding off the syllabus.

Yet, as so often is the case, the right decision is not cost free; we are losing something important as we lose sight of "Children of the Sea".

#JosephConrad #ChildrenOfTheSea #Narcissus #Racism #MoralDilemmas

Image -- CBN Polona via Picryl.com -- Public domain

Robert Fairhead
I read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad during my classics catch-up period in England during the late 1980s. While I remember little of the story, I recall being in awe of Conrad's evocative description of the steamboat journey up the forested Belgian Congo.

I am aware of the criticism of Conrad and the novel as racist. However, I was intrigued when I saw the audiobook version of Heart of Darkness "performed" by Kenneth Branagh (Audible Studios 2010). Would I still find the writing evocative? Or would the story be too racist?

The answer was yes to both for me. And while the derogatory description of African people and the abuse by their colonial overlords is repulsive, if I excised those parts of the book from my consciousness, I was still in awe of Conrad's writing.

One thing that struck me was that I couldn't tell where the protagonist Marlowe's sympathies lay. His generalisations are racist, though they could be said to be "of their time". But he also expresses disgust at the colonial brutality.

I'll leave this for others to debate. However, I don't regret revisiting The Heart of Darkness as an audiobook.
