Monika BargetNot a real <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/FASoS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FASoS</a> town hall meeting --- but still a topic related to real-world challenges in Dutch <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/highereducation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#highereducation</a>: Students of our BA <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/DigitalSociety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DigitalSociety</a> at Maastricht University presented an academic role-play on cryptocurrency donations as a means to back up university finances this morning and also created an invitation poster that participants could use to take notes.

Monika BargetAt the <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/RMeS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RMeS</a> Winterschool at <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/FASoS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#FASoS</a> we are also brainstorming <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AI</a> applications that could make society or academia more inclusive. My group came up with a citation checker that flags potential biases in reference lists. We would make the underlying model as small and eco-friendly as possible -- relying on existing <a href="https://akademienl.social/tags/NLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#NLP</a> algorithms where possible. The question if AI can help us question our positions has been a recurring theme of our discussions. Looking forward to the next paper presentations!

Infrastructural constraints are often the main hindrance to technologically advanced, cross-institutional and truly international research projects. Hopefully our meeting can, on a small scale, contribute to changing that for good!
