@Sturmflut I think Signal will probably turn out to be only a stepping stone towards a better solution that ultimately

1) provides a real-world method to connect to from independent apps
2) can be hooked up to an independent notification service
3) supports networks of distributed instances

Imo #matrix / #element comes closest atm

For Signal and WA, this is a pure numbers game. They will wait for a mobile OS to reach like 10 milion users and the users wont switch until it supports Signal/WA

(Dette er for ho trulova. Eg har ikkje iOS, så eg litt verre å sjekke sjølv. Den største nedsida ho trulova har til #Matrix for no er at appen ho har (#Element) ikkje har eiga funksjonalitet for å sende GIF. Ho må installere tilleggapp på sjølve tastaturet sitt for å få det likt som meg.)

Speaking of, the #Element experience is horrible as ever. Sorry but this thing is pain. Especially on desktop where it again(!) won't even start on #Wayland without disabling GPU support:

With the most recent update to the Video rooms (BETA) on #Element, it seems as though everything is there to be a suitable Discord replacement. Screen sharing, audio calls, video calls. It's all there, now I just need to convince people to give this program a shot for a third time.. Maybe I'll wait til after the beta.

If only #XMPP had a client like this. 😢

What's the *easiest* way to set up a #Matrix server that roughly has feature parity with Discord? That means, (group) voice chat, screen sharing, video chat, custom emoji, channels and spaces, read receipts, as painlessly as possible.

Not public, just for me and a couple of friends who migrate from Discord.
I'm not good at server administration, but I do have access to a VPS.

@aks If I wouldn't struggle with "Unable to decrypt mesaage" on a daily basis I would advertise Matrix my peers. But #Matrix and #Element got money from French government and German armed forces and the user experience did not get better over the last 5 years.
