I did some dyeing for the first time since November! My second attempt at a green (#10 in the photo), and my first attempt at an orange (#11).

I’ve also added a photo of this green next to my previous attempt at a green (#9), which shows how much difference it can make to use a different blue in the mix. The blue and yellow are in the same proportions in each batch, but the cerulean blue and cobalt blue give very different results. (#9 looks nicer here than under most lighting conditions — non-overcast daylight suits it, but most of the time it looks kinda ugly.)

And finally a photo of my orange and my latest green along with an extremely failed attempt at a purple (#1) — I like these three together and am now pondering quilting patterns for them.

Two small bundles of fabric tied up with thin black string and labelled with slips of paper. The one on the left is a lightly variegated bright green, and its label reads: Dye job #10, white cotton poplin, 3% 004 lemon yellow, 1% 070 cerulean blue. The other is a more heavily variegated light/deep reddish orange, and its label reads: Dye job #11, white cotton poplin, 3.5% 004 lemon yellow, 0.5% 034 magenta. Some mysterious force in your mind tells you that the 004, 034, and 070 are the numbers of those particular dyes in the Jacquard Procion MX labelling system, and the percentages are the weights of each dye (as a proportion of the weight of fabric) used to make these colours.
The bright green fabric from the previous photo next to a darker, muddier green with the label: Dye job #9, white cotton poplin, 3% 004 lemon yellow, 1% 076 cobalt blue. The two greens go together quite nicely in this light, which is indirect daylight.
The bright green and orange fabrics from the first photo, with a third one which despite being a deep variegated pink has a label reading: Dye job #1, white cotton poplin, 4% 050 deep purple. (There is nothing deep purple about it.) The colour combination is reminiscent of kids’ sweets, or perhaps of fruit in a videogame.

Making a mess in the kitchen. I normally dye outside in summer. But I finally want to work with these fabric strips that are too white for the project. So far, I've only dyed paper with this mixture (for days in the sun). I'm curious to see if it will work.

Tip: If you have tea too old to drink, they give a great dye for most papers and natural textiles!

Hand-dyeing post 3 of 3: We still had some skeins left, so I blanched madder chips and dyed cotton in the blanching liquid (left, top); then made a dye bath (left, bottom).
Image 2 shows the difference between blanching liquid (orangey, left) and dye bath (red, right). Image 3 shows a closeup of madder on 4ply - I love this colour!

Dyeing Part 2 of 3: We had some blanks left, so I continued to play at home using natural dyes.
Top left: Gaywool Watercrest overdyed with calendula; middle left: logwood. Bottom Left: I tried to make an indigo vat but was too impatient. I overdyed the 4ply indogo (bottom left) with logwood, interesting reaction.
