Bobbing Boat<p>Conserving power is a theme, when living on a boat.</p><p>After a day of boating, you'd think it's OK to stop the engine right away. But sometimes it needs to keep running, to power electric devices that draw more than the boat's batteries and inverter can provide.</p><p>Some appliances draw a lot of electricity—a washing machine, iron, vacuum, toaster, microwave oven, electric chainsaw. Bobbing Boat<p>The boat's domestic batteries are aging and need a bit of relief once the sun sets. Solar panels don't work by starlight. 🌞</p><p>The freezer has a couple of bottles of ice, to keep things chilled overnight, when the fridge dial gets adjusted from 2 to ½. Bobbing Boat<p>Boating is easier than a few decades ago.</p><p>We used to read our Nicholson guide for clues about canalside shops. Bobbing Boat<p>Spring evenings can be chilly. To warm the boat, a cast-iron stove burns briquettes, scooped in from the bucket at left and arranged using tongs.</p><p>Ashes fall through a grate into a drawer that gets emptied into an ash bucket.</p><p>On top, a fan gently pushes heat through the space. Bobbing Boat<p>The Macclesfield Canal has broken through its bank. This is called a breech. Or is it spelled breach?</p><p>It's pants either way.</p><p>(That's a pun only Brits and Aussies will understand. Breeches are a type of trousers. The expression "it's pants" means "it's unpleasant". Bobbing Boat<p>Yesterday's fallow canal section was a 10-minute walk. Half already has the water restored. The weir (in the previous post) is in good shape because volunteers worked on it. Bobbing Boat<p>1700s canal engineers tried various weir designs. This one's circular. Excess water flowed down the channel and over the perfectly horizontal ring of bricks, to drain away.</p><p>Sadly, this is part of an orphaned section of canal that is now fallow.<br>Happily, there's a group of Lichfield volunteers rebuilding this canal and its locks, to reconnect it to the Birmingham Canal Network. This Is My Glasgow<p>Today was a great day for indulging in a bit of gongoozling at the Applecross Basin on Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow. If you don't know already, gongoozling is the act of watching the activity on a canal, but without getting involved. Bobbing Boat<p>When it's underway, the boat goes 3 miles per hour – slower when there are locks to pass through. But a moving boat is a free boat. Even at 3 miles per hour.</p><p>Over the next 50 days I'll be watching the Canal & River Trust's progress updates about their winter maintenance projects, also known as winter stoppages. Bobbing Boat<p>Getting up at 02:30 to put more wood and coal briquettes on the dying fire is something people with central heating, gas, and electricity don't have to think about.</p><p>I thought about it because, though I was still comfortable under the blankets, my exposed face was feeling a chill creeping through the boat. The thermometer inside said 14°C (57°F). Bobbing Boat<p>Along the dock, the marina has a number of prepay-type electric meters for shorelines. I keep a healthy balance on mine so the boat always has electricity.</p><p>To top up my balance, the meter accepts prepaid cards made of paper with a brown magnetic strip in the centre. I lift up the plastic cover (held on by duct tape) to insert the card in a slot. Bobbing Boat<p>After a week of freezing temperatures, the ice in the basin is 4 centimeters (1½ inches) thick.</p><p>I was able to crack it by stomping on it hard, a few times. Then I lifted a huge plank of the broken ice and smashed it against the dock to free one of my ropes that had frozen in.</p><p>No particular reason, just … I hadn't realised that the end of a rope had blown off my roof and had been dangling in the water. Bobbing Boat<p>The canal's iced over. Almost got frostbite, walking back. The embers of this morning's fire kept the boat at +4°C (39°F) inside.</p><p>I waxed a log with candle stubs to help it ignite, then re-lit the stove. Bobbing Boat<p>To get through to spring, I bought solid fuel. It takes 2 split logs and some kindling to start the coal briquettes.</p><p>There may have been a run, because the forecast this week says -6°C nights. I bought:<br>• 100 kg of coal briquettes—all but 2 bags in the shop.<br>• A half-dozen bags of kindling. Bobbing Boat<p>While I was away, the wind ground my (electric) shoreline between the dock and the hardened bank, fraying the wires and shorting out the entire dock.</p><p>My neighbours unplugged my boat, leaving it without minimal heating while the weather went below zero. 😵</p><p>Tomorrow I'll detach the plug, cut off 2 meters of cord to remove the frayed wires, and then reattach the plug. Bobbing Boat<p>It's freezing -3°C tonight and will freeze -2°C to -4°C every night for at least a week.</p><p>I won't get back to the boat for another 36 hours to light the wood stove, so I hope the electric heater, which I left on low, does its job. If not, this weather might be hard on the plumbing.
