Mad Cat
An autistic story... my wife and I...

@actuallyautistic @pathfinder

My current wife and I met when she was 2 and I was 6. She was crying because her mother had washed her hair and that scared her. It was 1969 and we are half cousins. For years we saw each other very little because we lived 1,100 km from each other. But when she was 14 and I was 18, she came to visit us at my house for her vacation. It was love at first sight. We fell in love. We were both the "odd ones" in the family, intelligent and not very sociable. It was almost a Greek tragedy because of the beliefs and prejudices of that time and after trying to see each other for a while and after several trips we ended up separated. She was forced and I had to accept. Then when I was in the army, in the middle of a very big crisis in which I almost took my life, I wrote her a letter (there were no cell phones or social networks, it was 1984) and she replied that she was going to get married. It was totally bitter for me. After that, military life brought out the worst in me and I traveled for work.
Life went on for both of us, she had 3 sons and I had a daughter. In 2008 I had a psychiatric crisis and ended up admitted to a mental hospital, she knew about it and was very distressed. In 2010, with a very bad first diagnosis, she decided to look for me. She traveled to my city and we were together for a week. When she returned, she divorced and in 2011 she went to live with me, I lived a block from the hospital because of the frequent crises she had.
In 2012, I came to live in Buenos Aires with her and since then we have been together, the relationship with the whole family is very good, with her sons and my daughter.
Here comes the autism part: In 2018 my granddaughter was born and she is autistic, that dispelled the doubts and I went to have an evaluation that resulted in me having double exceptionality, I am gifted + autistic and probably not bipolar. That triggered a cascade of diagnoses and it turns out that she and two of her daughters are autistic as well as my daughter and granddaughter.
It's an interesting story and many people are telling me to write a book but I don't feel like exposing ourselves so much for now, especially for my mental health.

#autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticlife #AutisticLove #mentalhealth #fate

Rachel J Graves
Hey lovely people! We've put together the ultimate survey to understand the problems faced by neurodivergent people when getting started with, working toward, and finishing their goals.

The findings are going to be used by us to improve our app, Cammi, that is going to help with these problems.

The survey takes 5-10 minutes, so we're also running a Prize Draw. We're giving away a £30 amazon voucher, and a year of access to Cammi.

If you consider yourself neurodivergent, i.e Autism, ADHD, AuDHD, Other (we accept self-diagnosis), then I'd really appreciate you filling it out.

For details, and to fill out the survey please visit https://tally.so/r/n0DQ9A

#neurodivergent #adhd #autism #audhd

Please boost for reach 🚀

Gilgwath
I noticed how many of the #allistic people and especially organisations tend to just walk all over my schedule. Kevin Davy
It's apparently aromantic awareness week. At 60, I only realised a few years ago that this is what I was. Before that, I didn't have a name, only the reality.

One of the things I always knew, from quite a young age, was that I would never be married. As a teen and young man, I was painfully aware of the pressure to settle down and get into a settled relationship. But, to be honest, I never had the desire to. It's not that I didn't try, but it was certainly more in terms of thinking that I should do, rather than because I had any real desire to. It was not a pleasant time in my life. The relationships I did attempt never ended well, which was hardly surprising and almost totally my fault and I always felt a certain amount of guilt about that. I also felt a degree of shame about the way I felt and the need to hide it. It was yet another way in which I was different and the sort of different that stood out and set me apart from others.

Of course, being an undiagnosed autistic, this feeling was nothing new. I had always been different, in so many ways and learning how to hide that, at least as best as I could, had become second nature by then. It also gave me another reason to, that I was so fundamentally broken, that I couldn't even function normally in this way. That it wasn't me, it was all the ways in which I was wrong and dysfunctional and the low self-esteem that arose from this, that made me this way and that if only I could find the key to understanding and therefore potentially fixing this, then I could be alright.

Not that I was going to get to that point for a long time, or that fixing this was ever really an option. But, as the years rolled by and the pressure to be in a relationship faded, I did manage to settle more into my solitary life, without feeling the guilt and failure as much as I did, but with it still being there. Of course, as a man, I had the advantage of being able to do this. There is a quantifiable and appalling difference in the way men and women are treated in this respect. In the ways in which society views unmarried, or unpartnered, men and women, that has nothing to do with the reality and everything to do with prejudice, bigotry and sexism. Something that may never entirely be eradicated. Because the normative expectations of what it means and the ways it should be expressed are deeply engrained.

But, the simple fact is that, being in a traditional romantic relationship is as impossible for me to imagine, or want, as being in a homosexual relationship is for a straight person, or vice versa. We are the way we are, simple as. Not because we're broken, or wrong, or defective in any way. But, because it is our nature. I am aromantic, just as I'm autistic, and there really is nothing wrong with that.

#Aromantic
#Autism

Let's make this difficult ⚫🟣⚪🟡
#Introduction

After many months of study and copious notes as an un-logged lurker, I have determined that the best way to connect broadly with the Fedi audience is to talk about sports.

Basketball saved my life. It’s how I rehabilitated my mind-body connection after developing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome a decade or so ago in my early twenties (on top of my already extant Fibromyalgia). The worst part about CRPS is that it scrambles the way our brains interpret pain so that extreme pain (“hello, old friend”), which in a healthy system is a signal to stop or change behavior, can also or simultaneously be a signal that we need to move more. I spend extraordinary mental energy distinguishing, poorly, between the two. What often happens is that it paralyzes (literally – this is how people lose limbs) not the affected limbs themselves (my arms, more recently my legs) but the part of your brain that processes the desire, need, or ability to move them. If you stop moving them for long enough, you lose the limb. I spent about five years with a type of ‘mental paralysis’ until I started dribbling a basketball and shooting free throws (with an un-housed man in his 70s who taught me to play like Pete Maravich; I miss you Dale).

Edited to add hashtags: #autism #crps #fibromyalgia #disability
1/
