Michelangelo had an astonishing understanding of human anatomy, which was so advanced that some of his artwork reveals details that were unknown or poorly understood in his time. One particularly obscure example is the "Creation of Adam" on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Researchers have noted that the depiction of God surrounded by angels resembles an anatomically accurate cross-section of the human brain.

Did you know the 1st recognised #Neanderthal skeleton was initially believed to be a deformed #Russian?

In 1856, a skull was found near Düsseldorf. Anatomist August Mayer examined the #bones & concluded that the strong pelvis was the result of riding & that the pronounced brows were from worrying from pain. He thought him a Russian Cossack from the Napoleonic War.

Another anatomist, Hermann Schaaffhausen, had actually correctly identified the bones - but he wasn't popular.

This is a photo of the skull cap of "Neanderthal 1" - the fossil mentioned in the post. It shows the very upper part of a humanoid skull, including the brow bridge. The skull is a deep sand colour, looking somewhat uneven. The bones appear very thick. The brow bridge is very prominent, shaped almost like a rounded "m". The background is white.
This is a charcoal drawing of Hermann Schaaffhausen, the man who correctly identified the fossil but was dismissed due to being unpopular. It shows a man in his thirtieth or forties, from the mid 19 hundreds. He wears a jacket, waistcoat and white starched shirt, with a minimal collar and a small black bowtie. His face is round, somewhat overweight, and enclosed by a trimmed beard which covers his chin, cheeks and all the way to his ears. He has no facial hair otherwise. His hair is styled in an almost-bob, ending just above his ears. He has a deep parting on the right, with the rest combed over to the left. His eyes are small but lively, with gently shaped brows. His nose is average, neither up-nor down turned. His cheeks are overly full. His mouth has a large lower-than-upper lip and is set in a mild smile.
