May Day, May Day, on this Day in May I have a thing to say. Long has federation been a consideration, especially as Mastodon appears to be more than a mirage. Alas, choices will paralyze and ides fail to materialize. This post, this instance, this moment, yet another push will be shoved as the chains of unfree software continue to weigh. To that I say, Hey! Eventuality may not have crystalized, but for now my toots can be distillized. Remember to #FLOSS if you want to enjoy #bigandlittleFfreedom
When you're talking about Linux, it's okay to say that it's "open source".
It's okay to say that it's "free software".
It's okay to call it "GNU/Linux", "Linux", or to mess up its name.
It's okay to refer to it as "the one with the friendly penguin".
Part of RMS' legacy has been an incessant obsession with terminology and pedantry, overshadowing far more important shared objectives which are fundamentally emancipatory in nature.
Pedantry is not activism; it is alienating, not emancipatory.
The board voted unanimously to post the following statement on the FSF website: While our primary mission is freedom for software users, we want to be clear, the FSF board unanimously condemns misogyny, racism, and other bigotry as well as defamation, intimidation, and unfair attacks on free thought and speech.
25: Governance, Leadership, and Founder's Syndrome https://fossandcrafts.org/episodes/25-governance-leadership-founders-syndrome.html
What is governance? To what degree are leaders within a governing institution subject to its rules? We use this framework to discuss the unexpected announcement of RMS's re-appointment to the FSF board.
I just published a short blog post adding my voice to the chorus of people speaking out against Richard Stallman's return to the @fsf's board of directors. https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/the-free-software-foundation-and-richard-stallman
It's short so I'll include the full text in a thread below.
Hmm, I finally read through a few more of the longer form responses to the current @fsf controversy. https://www.arp242.net/rms.html by @email@example.com is the one which aligns most closely to my current thinking. I'm not sure whether or not I'll sign the letter, but I appreciate, agree, and support what it is trying to achieve. #bigandlittleFfree #bekindinkind #FLOSSdaily #spreadloveandlibre
Mind was spinning, so I avoided some other work and put together a preliminary analysis of the petition letters regarding the controversy surrounding the @fsf PDF, data, and code can be found here: https://github.com/altsalt/rms-letter-comparison #bigandlittleFfree #bekindinkind #FLOSSdaily #spreadloveandlibre
Interesting. https://free-software-logo.codeberg.page/ by @firstname.lastname@example.org suggests a logo for Free Software. It’s licensed as CC0 (No copyright) for free use. This can be used to indicate #FOSS / #FLOSS instead of using a company logo like e.g. from GitHub Inc., that may be used to _host_ free or open software but has a distinct logo of it’s own (the Octocat logo is a registered trademark).
Sending virtual hugs to all women in the #OpenSource #FOSS community especially my fellow #directors #OpenSourceInitiative Celebrate #InternationalWomensDay and get more women featured in @wikipedia Looks like most male directors have their own article already🤨https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Source_Initiative#Board_members
Ooh, it is probably worth a mention to announce that I'm running for one of the #OSI affiliate board seats. If you, or someone you know, is part of an OSI affiliate project, please consider extending me a vote. Thank you for your consideration! #OpenSourceInitiative #FLOSS #bigandlittleFfree
@snowdrift is applying as a high priority project at #fsf and I heartily support their inclusion there! Their innovative crowdmatching mechanism for #donations focused on #funding #foss is great, imho.
Judge for yourself. They wrote a very convincing blog post about their fsf application:
#Snowdrift still discussing some of the details of the mechanism, so all contributions are welcome!
Read our latest blog post to find out why Snowdrift.coop would make an excellent addition to the @fsf High Priority Free Software Projects list, heading a new key area of focus, Sustainability and Growth. #FSF #FreeSoftware #FreeLibreOpen #SustainableUserFreedom https://blog.snowdrift.coop/2021-high-priority-free-software-project-list/

@ilpianista I was just searching for a client that could publish to both Twitter and Mastodon and Choqok looks the most likely. However, I do not run KDE and generally try to avoid installing any of the QT dependencies. That said, recently I've taken to digiKam via Flatpak. Is packing Choqok like this on the horizon? Thanks!
