"you don't need #quotetoots you can post a link & comment"
Also, in the official #MastodonApp...
- see toot that links to a toot (or Activity Pub post)
- click it & arrive at new interface as the full web app Mastodon renders
- click boost/fave, get asked to login.
- click back> clk three dots menu> 'open in Ffox/etc'
- click URL bar> select all> copy
- back to App> Search section> paste URL
- Toot appears!
- boost
If you think this is optimal UX maybe you need time outside your tech circle
@nicol Absolutely! It's almost funny how weird this is.
@elk, however, offers native and twitter-like quote tweets. And then there is #Calckey, where it is perfectly implemented without hacks.
Still, you are right, relying on a standardized way to do easy things will not cater to many folks. Generally speaking, I have a feeling that the 'having no quote tweets is a blessing' argument has not aged well.
@stefanlaser @elk I thought there was a decent compromise offered when the debate was raging during migration2 for those who felt QTs had helped personalised attacks on **itter, where Quote Toots on one's own Toots could be either allowed, or not, by the user in their settings.
@nicol @stefanlaser @elk looking at GitHub that does seem to be the consensus - opt in controls for allowing woes of your post.
@nicol quote posts aren’t as much a UX issue as a behavioural issue: the majority of them on the other site were performative, and I don’t really want to enable that negativity here.
The convoluted post or profile view/boost/follow flow though, yeah. That badly needs solving. It doesn’t hinder me anymore because my browser extension https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct and the mobile app I use solve it, but you shouldn’t have to install browser extensions to solve basic UX problems!
@nicol I’ll grudgingly accept having quote posts if they are opt in (which it seems they will be), since so many people want them. I just hope we can build up a cultural norm that quote posts are only for constructive additions to the original post, and not pile ons or (and this is actually what I really dread flooding my timeline) low value additions to posts that should have been a boost. “Great take, read this one” <- should be a boost.
@Brendanjones it would be good if - like parts of fedilife - the norms here made pile-ons worse for the person trying to do it than the victim. Maybe a lot was a byproduct of the snark-culture that many of twitter's diehards seem glued to & this space has less of.
I used QTs a lot before to boost a blog or news article while adding a quote from the article, presentation or video. But I also had someone QT to try shame me to their followers -I'm still moaning about it!- so I do get the concerns.
@nicol “I used QTs a lot before to boost a blog or news article while adding a quote from the article, presentation or video.” Yup I think that’s also a healthy use of QT’s, especially if the source of the content is off-Fediverse. Or they’re on the Fediverse but they didn’t make the post discoverable through sharing the title or relevant hashtags.
@Brendanjones
> “Great take, read this one” <- should be a boost.
That's a good point. There was a lot of 'I endorse this message', which could diminish the original person in favour of the booster-endorser. But maybe sometimes that's helpful to for establishing consensus around new issues/questions? A boost might be an FYI not an endorse.
I miss the ability to tailor a post for some followers… ie why this blog with a very technical title is relevant to artists. It felt like crowd-subediting.
@nicol “But maybe sometimes that's helpful to for establishing consensus around new issues/questions? A boost might be an FYI not an endorse.”
Hmm I’m not so sure about the right norm for this one. I think if you just want to endorse another post and its message, I’d say the healthiest action is to boost the post and then add an endorsing comment to the post.
@nicol this is maybe dependent on the post and the poster. I find at the moment there aren’t many posts with so many comments that I can’t skim through them all and see who’s commented. In which case I’ll see who’s endorsed the post. No endorsing QT necessary. However as the Fediverse gets more populated, and also as more people join who attract a large followers count, there may be more posts with hundreds or even thousands of comments in which your comment might get lost
@Brendanjones that's true /* endorsing comment */
@nicol haha thanks
