In #Flancia we'll meet

Is mastodon.social the best 'default instance' of the [[fediverse]]?

I know that having a [[default instance]] might be seen as missing the point of the Fediverse, or perhaps even as counter-productive; but I believe having solid defaults makes systems more inclusive.

I'll be honest with you, I'm a bit of a fire starter.

I say that the best [[default instance]] should get to claim twitter.com; maintain shadow profiles for all twitter.com users who are willing -- who want to take part of the Fediverse with their twitter.com identities and express this intent clearly.

If Twitter (@twitter) doesn't like this, they should host their instance themselves. Support ActivityPub now.

@flancian @vera @Gargron @karlicoss @trailmarks the Bluesky project is working on research for Twitter to support decentralized social media.

I was just pitching someone on setting up a new Mastodon server for their community. That’s the way — onboard more communities into the fediverse.

@bmann @vera @Gargron @karlicoss @trailmarks I'll meet you at "that's *a* great way", for sure :) I'm just spitballing on extra ways, to put it some way, just in case we can hit on something that makes the Fediverse more inclusive and accessible.

@flancian tbh i dont agree w there being a default instance ideologically

and, no one should be able to "claim" twitter shadow profiles, thats against the spirit of decentralization

@pee_zombie thanks for the feedback! it's very useful to bounce ideas like this -- I appreciate it.

Just to make sure I communicated what I had in mind properly: no *instance owner* should be able to claim shadow profiles -- but Twitter users that want to use the Fediverse with their twitter.com identities should be able to, regardless of whether Twitter the company is interested in providing this service.

Does this framing change anything? It's fine if it doesn't.

@pee_zombie I like the federation as it is, I just feel that with the current barriers to entry it's not inclusive as it "should' be -- so I like to daydream in this space.

@flancian yeah totally agree Twitter users should be able to do that; it's ok imo for instances to mirror unclaimed profiles but they should probably respect a claim of authenticity once made 🤔 altho lots of nuance to be worked out there

which barriers to entry do you have in mind?

@pee_zombie first, choosing an instance. fediverse.party is the best way I know of of finding one, but choice paralysis is real.

Second, creating yet another account.

I'm thinking of a service that tries to remove both barriers: click here to log your Twitter account into the Fediverse; choose an instance to delegate your account or go with a solid default.

@pee_zombie
MVP could be moa.party (which we run; but any willing bridge could support this) which already does Twitter login, plus special casing a default instance flow and/or doing address mapping.
