Are you an REI member? The REI worker union is asking members to vote NO/withhold in their current board elections. More here: https://www.ourrei.com/2025-rei-board-elections
@shauna@social.coop It's worth noting that they changed the bylaws in 2022 so that only "active" members can vote. Which they define as someone who made at least a $10 purchase in 2024 or signed up for their co-op membership in 2024.
@deathkitten @shauna Ran into this as an issue last night, and was genuinely surprised to learn I didn't buy anything at REI last year.
@travissouthard@jawns.club @shauna@social.coop I was ready to go vote to support the union, but I haven't bought anything in a while. Haven't had a need, and was irritated to find out they were union busters. >.<
I'll probably make a point to buy something this year to ensure I can vote next year if the union calls on us to do it again.
@deathkitten
I bought something in December 2023
and January 2025
but nothing in 2024. I missed the news about the voting change or I might have prioritized that higher.
@shauna @travissouthard
@deathkitten @shauna @travissouthard the union busying and layoffs pissed ne iff so bad that I avoid buying, which is a pretty neat trick by th board.
I did buy a fre things, so I am active enough to help.
@deathkitten @shauna
Whoa. I've been a member since the early 80's. Maybe i bought stuff last year.
@Okanogen@mastodon.social
Another thread I was discussing this in suspects it was done intentionally after the backlash against the union busting to suppress the union sympathetic vote.
@shauna@social.coop
@deathkitten @shauna
If I recall, there was a previous vote and i voted pro union. But was that a false memory?
@deathkitten @shauna
I just placed a small order with REI, so that I can vote next year. I recommend that other REI members in alignment with the union do the same. We CAN remake REI into a cooperative!
@shauna I just voted “withhold.”
@shauna Already done! member and former REI employee here.
@shauna I swear they haven't even notified me of voting. And it isn't on their own site?
@shauna I've never bothered to vote before, but the $700 I spent last year at least enables me to monkey wrench up these anti-union selections.
@jeffreywindsor @shauna ditto i didn’t even know i could vote i opted out of all emails.
@shauna Fight to keep your co-op!! Canada’s Mountain Equipment Co-op was member-owned for 50 years, and then the board dissolved it and sold it to a private equity firm. It was a travesty.
@shauna Kind of off topic, does anyone have any thoughts on what’s gone wrong at REI in the past 10 or 15 years? Joined in 1980s and used to enjoy going in for convenience of being able to shop for hiking, skiing, and camping gear under one roof.
In recent years high prices and lack of selection particularly for clothing has been off putting. In the old days if you needed gear and didn’t understand technical aspect you could count on store personnel for in depth advice, but no more.
@michaelormsby I Can't say that has been my experience of REI (member since 1981, currently using Santa Fe store but previously Conshohocken/Phila. and before that Seattle).
@shauna Casting my vote is the most satisfaction I’ve gotten from that membership. Thanks for posting, I’m glad for the information
@shauna Why hasn’t REI notified us about this vote yet?
@shauna wish the website said why I should vote withhold... I got my notification today. I don't follow the politics of the coop enough to really know.
@shauna There are shenanigans going on. When I follow the vote link in REI's email and vote "withhold", I get a 500 error. When I follow the vote link from the ourrei.com site, it says my member number and zip don't match their records.
@ambiorickx @shauna I got the “doesn’t match” message, and I think it’s because I’m not an “active” member, because I didn’t buy anything in 2024 - and apparently buying something now won’t make me “active” until next year
@shauna Mildly interesting and funny that I got my email reminding me as a member to go vote, the day after I already went and voted withhold on them all.
@shauna @dangoodin Thank you for posting this. I just voted NO/Withhold.
Edit: Just got my "vote for your board of directors" email today, 03/06/2025.
@shauna just voted
