Time for my #introduction. I've been in #UXDesign for 40 years, working at Apple in the 80s, Symbian, Google, and frogdesign.
I'm convinced we're stuck in our #UX ways, not seeing desktop, mobile, or ML for what they could be.
#OpenSource is a profoundly positive force, if we could just figure out how to work together on #UXDesign problems.
I'm semi-retired, looking for ways to push things forward as well as give back.
@scottjenson Hello
Have you expanded on how we're stuck in our UX ways anywhere? I'd love to hear your views on that (I tend to agree)
@edeverett I do! I blog (very slowly) at https://jenson.org
@scottjenson Ha! I feel you on blogging very slowly!
Thanks, I'll have browse
@scottjenson Stuck? I thought we're regressing.
@scottjenson Agree with the UX stuck thing. I'm not a designer myself and in my last project, a collaborative cultural guide at asturtur.com I keep simplifying the UX and visitors (I talk to) feel happy about it. Quiete a few are not even computer literate.
True that I design thinking of my mother (I haven't been a teen for decades)... and I'd need a proper designer, that last point is true, too. UX design should be simple and clear for a start.
@scottjenson true!
FLOSS is late on UX, we are just welcoming some UX designers now but mindsets still have to change in FLOSS communities.
Maybe join @opensourcedesign, they have a forum
Welcome on fedi!
Welcome on fedi!
@scottjenson I'm not sure if you're familar with @penpot #penpot but it's a sort of #foss #figma replacement. It even allows importing of those projects into it while Figma still allows export:)
@lps @scottjenson Thanks :)
@scottjenson very interested in this work. Would like to learn more.
@scottjenson Nice body of work there, sir!
@scottjenson
Howdy~ I'm new to Mastadon (from twitter). A way to give back & utilize your UX xp is to advocate for more accessibility. Users with vision, hearing, & cognitive issues are left out of the loop.
Just seeing you make hashtags more legible and screen reader friendly (1st letter capital for each word) is a welcome sign
@kathologist Hello, nice to emeet you! As a #UX designer, it's so easy to see the need for all of this. I'm not the expert needed to solve problems like #moderation, but I do hope to help build a clear articulation of the problem. We only get solutions if the community wants it.
However, a11y is something I've addressed often in my career and the solutions usually aren't that hard. Not pursuing them is just frustrating.
@scottjenson Scott you seem like a nice guy and al but I'd be lying if i understood anything after "time for my introduction" - but welcome
@scottjenson We need new UIs, that are not designed by young hip "making a mark" "designers", but by old thoughtful seen-all-the-past-mistakes people like you. Please, go for it.
What made you choose Social Coop as an instance and do you have any thoughts about user ownership in tech (esp. through cooperatives)?
@LeoSammallahti I chose as it had a clear financial and governance model. It felt 'grown up' and I liked that.
I don't have any deep thoughts about user ownership but feel it's very much worth talking about further.
@scottjenson A bit late to this but I believe a big part of how UX gets stuck is an over-reliance on there being “a way” it should be done. I’m old enough to have been around before this became a formalized career path/academic course of study.
The best teams and people I’ve ever worked with readily embrace change and being open to making efforts with no immediate payoff. It’s hard to quantify value sometimes.
@adrianmadethis Exactly. Focusing on the right question and leaning into it, seeing where it takes you *is* a bit unbounded and makes lesser product managers worry. The trick is to do it fairly quickly and iterate fast. Most often, you don't know what you don't know. You need to unpack that.
@scottjenson may be kind of a late welcoming, but:
Welcome, Scott!
