Tapping the sign again - "sanity" is a framework of ableism, and using "sane" to describe things that are (for example) competent, earnest, above-board, practical, or expedient is a way to perpetuate and reinforce mistreatment of marginalized people. Is that really what you want to accomplish?
@redoak@social.coop I work in tech and the phrase "sanity check" is pretty common. I've been trying to use "gut check" instead for these reasons.
It's hard to shake a lot of this ableist language. Generally, we don't think about the origins of a phrase and we need to do better.
@redoak
Agreed.
AND people who actually work with mental health do not use the words "insane" or "crazy." Those words are cultural inaccuracies.
@redoak Is that part of why people having been using the term unhinged a lot, as a way of saying insane?
