Remember the time negotiated to end the war in ? Now women aren't able to speak in public or have a job.

This is why many Europeans are near Defcon1 over his full capitulation to Putin over . Putin's goal of restoring the USSR's borders through expansion and undermining their democracies is well documented; he won't settle for 20% of Ukraine & security 'guarantees', he'll keep going. As a friend said: "why is it countries on his border are so desperate to join NATO?".

@nicol yes. He might be taking part, to an extent, but we're fucking well involved.

@nicol

If Israel is allowed to get away with such behavior then of course so can Russia or anyone else.

Double standards leads to no standards.

@rzeta0 who mentioned Israel? If we use one war crime to negate another, we might as well all just give up. I could argue the British Empire never did anything bad because the Vikings and Romans invaded us first.

Ukraine is a sovereign nation. It was the world's third biggest nuclear power until it signed the Budapest Memorandum with USA, Russia and UK, who promised to protect it from invasion if it gave up its nuclear weapons (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest).

@nicol

Ukraine is about to find out what a "Middle East peace deal" feels like.

if you think Israel and Ukraine are unconnected, let me remind you of the infamous poem, "first they came for .."

and again - double standards lead to no standards

@nicol

Budapest Memorandum - one of the lessons here is not to trust the UK and USA.

The UK played a major part in creating the Middle East curse through its Balfour betrayal.

And the USA went to war with Iraq based on lies and killed half a million people. The same USA that armed Saddam then turned on him. The same USA that tore up the nuclear agreement with Iran.

@rzeta0

"one of the lessons here is not to trust the UK and USA."

The fact you don't mention Russia – the third power to sign the memorandum to defend Ukraine, yet ended up invading the country – suggests to me this whataboutery is more about defending Russia than anything else.

@rzeta0 'first'?

What single-lensed view of the world's history of horror, war & violent invasion does it start with Israel/Palestine? Perhaps that's your focus, or the story that you care about the most, & you care for no other - that's your choice.

But in reality the suffering there gets far more coverage in Europe than, say, the ~15 million people currently displaced in Sudan with 25 million needing urgent aid. Or the ~1.5m Afghan refugees in Pakistan about to be forced back to the Taliban.

@nicol and American troops died.

This will be worse.

Trump is too stupid for international relations.

@nicol
Putin's goal of not expanding his borders is also well documented.
