Been playing with #emby for about a week and it seems like a nice replacement for #plex, but I have to say I hate the non-up-front way that the features and apps appear to work but then interrupt you with a "this requires membership" prompt when you try to do something.
I'd rather have the features properly disabled instead of confusing me about what is and what isn't part of the free version.
It's also unclear if you can get rid of these by paying once, or if you *must* have a subscription.
@jjg So many solutions exist but all have different drawbacks.
I bought lifetime emby license a while back and there are no restrictions with it. It is the best total solution I've found but it has annoyances still.
@jjg yeah there is a bit of controversy recently about them introducing nagware features and closing the source to the mobile apps. I got the lifetime when they had a sale. I probably wouldn't purchase it now if i didn't already have it.
@kelbot @jjg http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-media-server-software-linux/ I'd never heard of most of those -- and the one I was thinking of wasn't on there! https://mediagoblin.org/
To be clear I'm happy to pay for the software, but I want to buy something, I don't want a subscription.
