"In 2024, it cost $N to run a Mastodon instance with ~1000 active users for a year. By the end of 2025, that figure had dropped to $0.5N, due to the launch of X, Y, Z."
What are X, Y, and Z?
In terms of cost, consider systems administration and moderation as paid work, even if the admin is not paying themselves for either of these things.
@mekkaokereke Along with pooling storage, it'd probably make folks on the rest of the web happy if mastodon instances pooled opengraph / preview card fetches. Maybe through shared caching proxies or protocol tweaks. Anything to cut down the thundering herd every time a link is shared.
@lmorchard @mekkaokereke This would also reduce the incentive for websites to block Mastodon, so we might get to actually see more preview cards!
@graue @lmorchard @mekkaokereke Oh is *that* why link previews are Like That? I didn't know, thank you! (sincere)
@Sharksonaplane yes, some websites block the Mastodon crawler because they get hit so hard from many different instances at once. Especially regrettable when it’s news sites
