#socialcoop maintenance is coming! We'll start upgrading the Mastodon instance next Monday. I'll publish an announcement soon.
@ntnsndr OK to turn up a VPS in digital ocean and incur some additional cost? I'm general, could the [[twg]] get an experiment allowance? Happy to write a proposal but I'd rather go for a dynamic setup up to a threshold (e.g. 50 monthly, although this will be much less) instead of having to write them all the time :)
@edsu @protean @Matt_Noyes FYI
@Matt_Noyes @flancian @edsu @protean really?
This is why we should move to fixed discretionary budgets for WGs. They should not need to get membership votes for reasonable expenses like this.
Would it be temporary or permanent?
@Matt_Noyes @flancian @edsu @protean can we use this opportunity (and that riseup doc I made) to sketch out what a reasonable allowance would be for each WG?
@Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @edsu @protean @flancian
as a long time friend of and new member of this cooperative I am so grateful for the flexibility, diligence, and thoughtful work that supports this instance.
Thanks!
@christina @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean @flancian Well, the influx of new members has been a welcome motivation to clean up house on some things we have not been so good on over the years:)
@ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean yes please! and thank you so much for the discussion.
Sorry but what's the link for the riseup doc? I'll document it in the appropriate places but I just lost my browser history as Firefox crashed hard
@ntnsndr @edsu @protean @flancian @Matt_Noyes totally agree that WGs need flex budget. People time is more “expensive” than anything else.
I think the only requirement should be a write up. “Spun up a VPS server for an extra $20/month to test X. See Y link for log of learnings”
@ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean it can be temporary until a vote is called if necessary, although getting a second server would highly improve our mean time to recovery for many catastrophic scenarios.
@ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean but the idea is to be able to use automation to make it easy+fast to bring up servers from scratch, and now that protean is back we have a better shot at getting there; so we could turn it down / have it in standby as needed if the coop runs into financial trouble.
@flancian @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean Here's the doc: https://pad.riseup.net/p/socialcoop-stipends
I was just reviewing it, actually... and moving toward a proposal of having a GBP 250/month budget for Tech and Community WGs. They don't have to use it all, but they can go up to that limit.
Also we should budget a fixed monthly contribution to Mastodon's Open Collective.
@ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @edsu @protean thank you!
@agora [[socialcoop stipends]]
@Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @edsu @protean thank you for the response Matt! I think this makes sense for expenses above a certain threshold, but would you be open to discussing moving to a flex paradigm by default for smaller expenses?
@Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @edsu @protean oh, I see, that makes sense, thank you!
Is it fine to have the TWG proposal be informal? As in, does this thread qualify ;) I hope so!
@Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @edsu @protean I also cross-posted this to the TWG chat now to be more inclusive: https://matrix.to/#/!akkaZImONyQWKswVdt:matrix.org/$166880916152817yDHvM:matrix.org?via=matrix.org&via=autonomic.zone&via=pub.solar
@Matt_Noyes @flancian @ntnsndr @protean we did discuss the need to bring up VMs for testing at our last tech call. But we didn't really iron out where we would be doing it, and we also noted that there are some concerns about how/where data is being moved around. So I think it would be good to bring a proposal to the TWG and then on to the members?
@edsu @Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @protean my plan for this weekend (note I have many plans for most weekends, and they don't always pan out :)) is to bring up a VM under the control of social.coop, meaning either in our Hetzner or Digital Ocean accounts. I'll post details in [[go/twg/chat]], please review :)
