Remember Delicious, the social bookmarking service? Remember the massive exodus to new services that popped up, like Pinboard?

Yeah, well Pinboard (run by one guy) just announced they bought Delicious!

@dajbelshaw As a user on Delicious I have noticed it's turbulent life. The collectiveness has always been one of the good things about that site. Maybe it is time to move on -- but I have no idea where to move...

@dajbelshaw evidently I have 365 bookmarks still on del.icio.us - added from 2005-2009. I'm sure those are all still highly relevant! LOL

@dajbelshaw As someone who bought a #pinboard account as part of the mass exodus when #delicious first sold and I didn't like the new management, I find this quite amusing. How many years later, I'm still a happy Pinboard customer and now that the crazy pants notion that all startups with funny domains are automatically worth billions has somewhat blown over, the guy with an actual business model buys the withered skeleton of his one hot competition.

@dajbelshaw Wow! This is so deliciously ironic.

And the Pinboard guy also gives wonderful talks about the internet, AI, etc. Well worth reading here: longform.org/archive/writers/m

@dajbelshaw omg, i remember how good the Pinboard guy was to the diaspora from Delicious, even when they were weirdo slash fans and fujoshi.

@fireh9lly @dajbelshaw he says the fanfic community are awesome users ( blog.pinboard.in/2011/10/the_f), and he frequently mentioned how good they are. They gave him detailed, important feedback on features

In December of 2010, Yahoo announced it was ‘sunsetting’ Delicious, an adventure I wrote about at length. The site was sold to the YouTube founders in 2011. They subsequently sold it to Science, Inc. in 2014. Science sold it to Delicious Media in 2016, and last month Delicious Media sold it to me.

Do not attempt to compete with Pinboard.

@dajbelshaw My favourite was Zootool but that went a long time ago.

@dajbelshaw
They bought it and basically they're shutting it down.

@Downes Well yeah, but shut down with the data still available as an archive, rather than just pulling the plug.

@dajbelshaw @Downes Delicious was still running? Hmmm. I did love that site for a long time.
