All the hysteria about is particularly ridiculous given that cattle feed in the UK can already legally be 0.15% plastic theguardian.com/environment/20 and dairy cattle are being fed all sorts of antibiotics for mastitis. It's so bizarre that everyone's up in arms about something actually well tested just because it's new, but seem to assume what cattle were eating already must be harmless.

The Guardian · Legal plastic content in animal feed could harm human health, experts warnBy Harriet Grant

And why is the go to billionaire for conspiracy theories always Bill Gates? I mean obviously there are no good billionaires, but compared to Musk or Bezos he's not the worst one out there. Is it because he's the only one who funds research?

@afewbugs for reasons that I don't understand, it always seems to be an antisemitic "he's Jewish, therefore <conspiracy>", except as far as I can tell that's also not true, but somehow it fuels a lot of the weird 5g-microchip, etc. nonsense around him? I dunno, trying to understand the conspiracy brain is difficult.

@sam yes I realised after I typed it that I was probably on to a loser looking for logic in conspiracy theories!

@sam @afewbugs It seems like there are residual strands of several other anti-science backlashes here that are being reactivated. Could be that the British are still on a hair-trigger regarding animal feed additives because they were ground zero for the Mad Cow Disease.

@afewbugs I think for many people it actually plays a role that he's not synonymous with the "freedom" / libertarianism / arseholeism (like Musk and Thiel, maybe Bezos) that many conspiracy theorists themselves feel sympathy for.

He's boring.

@Pepijn @afewbugs he's also been around for *ages* compared to the other too. Microsoft, under his leadership, was up to various shenanigans in the 80s and 90s: it might have created a background impression that he wasn't to be trusted, which makes his philanthropy seem suspicious to those people now.

@afewbugs I was going to get on a rant the other day when I read the BBC 'Verify' article regarding the alleged danger of bovaer.
Mad.
It's like we're living life in a Mitchell and Webb sketch 😁

@afewbugs

What will it take for people to go vegan? Rather than worrying about how the plastic animals eat might affect humans, stop feeding animals plastic. Animals are living beings. This lack of empathy in our world is killing everything.

@FranceskaMann oh I agree entirely, it would be far better for the climate and obviously for the cattle if we just stopped eating them instead of just trying to reduce their methane production, I just find it bizarre that this seems to be the thing everyone's fixated on

@afewbugs

When Beyond/Impossible burgers are so good, people can choose to leave cows alone.
