I wrote "For the First Time In Years, I'm Excited By My Computer Purchase" regarding my new #framework laptop (thanks @frameworkcomputer ) . https://changelog.complete.org/archives/10564-for-the-first-time-in-years-im-excited-by-my-computer-purchase
@jgoerzen @frameworkcomputer I'm hoping they expand into desktops in the nearish future...
@Steve @frameworkcomputer I was looking for a desktop for awhile also. It seems there is little of interest there, aside from some corporate desktops and some gaming rigs, neither of which were really right for my needs. The corporate desktops were mostly either cheapo and vastly underpowered, or hugely expensive Xeon-based workstations. Some middle-of-the-road but not much. And I'm not much of a gamer. A reasonably-priced upgradable laptop gave me everything I really wanted.
@Steve @frameworkcomputer 2/ My main holdout had been my Bluray burner, but I found a USB one so all is good there. I still have the old machine around for those once-every-5-year instances where I need its Firewire card, but other than that there's really nothing compelling about the destop form factor now that I have an upgradable laptop.
Those that need extreme performace, more than 64GB RAM, or more than two storage devices might still want one. But I have a file server on the LAN.
@jgoerzen @frameworkcomputer I'm heading in a similar direction -- repurposing an old desktop as a home server. The biggest reason to keep using my new desktop is the dual monitors.
@Steve @frameworkcomputer Makes sense. I believe the Framework laptop can drive two Thunderbolt devices simultaneously, FWIW.
