1. Adventures in canvassing:
We were doing get-out-the-vote doorknocking for registered Dems in an apartment/condo complex that had upstairs and downstairs apartments, with the staircase outside.
While we were upstairs, a guy who was not on our list, in no danger of having his door knocked, and who could certainly have done this face-to-face if he wanted to, yelled up to us, “Why don’t you mind your own business and stop telling people who to vote for?!?!”
2. I yelled back, “We’re just here to get out the vote!”
Long pause from our guy.
“Go Trump!!!” he finally managed.
I said, “Fine! Then go get out the vote for him, if you want!”
Silence.
Blackout.
(I think he’d been watching us and was desperately hoping we’d knock on his door so he could scream at two middle-aged women—one wearing a leg brace and limping badly—and was mad he’d missed his chance.)
3. Interior monologue of this guy: “Should I work for what I believe in? Or should I instead yell at people working for what they believe in? I choose…YELLING!”
Thank you!!!
@Julie Thank you for canvassing.
@heidilifeldman @Julie Just back from my afternoon of canvassing. Out of the 25-ish doors I knocked today, only 2 "go away" peeps and only one Trumper.
Side note: We see on our list who signed petition for Abortion Rights Amendment. If the "man of the house: answers the door, we do NOT ask for her. He's like "no way we're voting for that!" I just think quietly to myself, "what you don't know..."
Speaking of which, something to sooth the soul: https://jesspiper.substack.com/p/harris-could-takeiowa?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=1960047&post_id=151106102&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=false&r=ae5kj&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email
@DWTSquawk7600 @heidilifeldman I shared Jess Piper’s essay this morning! It is extremely heartening, even if Harris doesn’t win Iowa.
@DWTSquawk7600 @heidilifeldman @Julie great work!! Thanks.
"Go Trump" is what they say when they know Trump is losing but can't take any responsibility for changing the outcome. They won't do anything besides get angry and say "Go Trump!"
One of my neighbors posted "Go Trump" on Nextdoor repeatedly then complained he was being censored because his spam posts were deleted.
He's not trying to have a conversation with anyone. He offers no reason to support Trump. He posts all over the place completely ignoring the site rules about this.
But that's literally the only thing he does.
Previously he complained because no one offered to teach him all about HAM radio for free. It's entitlement plus laziness combined with anger.
Not a good look.
@dangrsmind Exactly. I don’t happen to know where the Republican party campaign office is in my county, but I’m sure that information is available to anyone who actually wants to work to get Republicans elected. But so many of them just want to feel like tough guys and simultaneously, helpless victims.
@Julie I bet you made the guy's day. Normally he has to yell at clouds
