1922 T-shirt sewing factory, New Albany, Indiana, USA, third floor and clerestory. In the summertime, radiator pipes just below the clerestory windows heated the air to initiate a convection current, drawing in cooler air from the windows below. Over the years, workers painted many of the windows blue to reduce glare resulting in this subtle stained glass effect. #HistoricRenovation #AdaptiveReuse

Photo at first appears to be black and white, with the upper 2/3 of the image showing the underside of a large wood framed ceiling and bare wood floor. The walls are made entirely of window panes. The image shows a very large, empty 50,000 square foot room with regularly spaced vertical steel poles supporting a lattice-like wooden ceiling structure 24 feet overhead, with neat rows of suspended fluorescent strip lights, and walls made almost entirely of glass window panes, much of the glass painted blue. In the center of the room, a large rectangular section of the ceiling appears to be cut out and lifted another 6 feet, again flanked by windows on all 4 sides. These upper level or clerestory windows can be opened from the ground floor by a mechanical crank system. This empty factory is almost church-like, with soaring ceiling and blue “stained” glass.
