Karlsruhe Castle at night - before the renovations

Since I took this image in 2010, the castle grounds have been renovated and the fountain no longer exists. All of the landscaping in front of the castle has been changed. This was taken at 10 pm and just after I took the shots, the fountain was turned off for the last time and all of the lights went out.

Yesterday I had a discussion with a group of photographers around the various film stocks we've come to prefer. I ended up sharing this image as an example of #IlfordDelta100 which for a long time, was my preferred #Monochrome #Film stock.

Specifically I enjoyed the smooth grain and contrasty midtones, but, still generally flat profile. It meant I could still have room to play with the contrast in post.

The shot is a longer exposure to allow the flow of the water to smooth and the path of the waterfall more obvious.

It's #WaterWednesday and with it I share a gorgeous sunset I witnessed years ago after a heavy rainfall on the coast of #Canada
With the clouds breaking, the warmth of the evening sun cast a gorgeous fiery colour palette over the remaining storm clouds.

My partner noted this image yesterday to me - we've been looking through my archive picking out images to print for our walls at home. So this one is now high on the list.

Storm Jocelyn Lands, Isle of Harris (2024). We waited a good few hours at this spot, hoping that the oncoming storm would create enough sea swell to crash dramatically over this giant rock. The tide eventually came in at sunset, and we got a symphony of conditions — waves, light, and a double rainbow! One of the most exhilarating moments I've ever had the pleasure of photographing.

The White Swan (2023)

I had never been to #Toronto or #NiagaraFalls before, but choosing to go in the middle of winter probably wouldn't be my recommendation. But my partner and I had flight vouchers that were expiring and a quick trip to see such iconic places in #Canada was a great use!

Our visit to #Niagara became my highlight of the trip. A fascinating mix of commercialism and nature.

A massive rock sits, covered in multiple layers of ice and snow. The snow bends and curves resembling a white swan shape. The background a mix of vertical streaks caused by the enormous Niagara Falls behind. Flying over a smaller rock, and only a few pixels in size are birds, revealing the enormous scale of these other rocks that at first, appear small.

Sunset at the beach during the low tide. My fav sport - chasing fleeting sand patterns. Sometimes it feels like being a hunter - I need to setup where I think the patterns will form and wait. And then be quick before they are gone with the next wave.

It is Wednesday! My favorite day of the week, because not only am I halfway to the weekend, but, it's also #WaterfallWednesday

This weekend I'm planning to chase #Waterfalls and will hopefully snag some new images. My #LandscapePhotography started with #Waterfalls so they have a soft spot for me.

These four are my personal favorites. The standard that I try to hold my future attempts to. Here's to #RealPhotosofRealPlaces

A high flow waterfall zigs and zags through the middle of the frame. Trees and shrubs border the canyon the waterfall has created. With small plants growing on the shelves created by the waterfall over years of flow. The waterfall is split by a large rock outcrop that has a tree growing from it.
Deep in a Canyon, just the tail end of the waterfall can be seen here. But, the remnants of its flow in the form of bubbles and waves streak the river that flows through the canyon. The moss covered granite ledges create giant walls on either side trapping the river to a narrow path.
An enormous waterfall Cascades over multiple levels of granite rock. Curved, trunk like rocks frame the image diagonally, covered in thick moss and. The warmth of the sun highlights the top of the frame, leaving the bottom cool and dark. I always struggle to shoot this waterfall as timing is important, too much flow and you can't stand anywhere near the base due to the volume of water spray.
An absolute favorite of mine. With the main falls cascading the many small ledges of the rock face to the right, and the smaller vertical water drop on the left providing balance to the frame. The cold blue water. This waterfall has been one of my favorites to visit for years.
