YouTube is the most popular social media site in the US, with 83% of adults and 93% of teenagers among its viewers. It is estimated YouTube has 2.5B monthly users – almost one in three people on Earth. YouTube has more than 100M paying subscribers. Only google.com garners more visits than YouTube.

Basic usage facts are closely guarded secrets. Researchers worked to discover some basic traits of YouTube by creating and deploying a “scraper” that randomly searches, finds, and downloads YouTube videos.

While the top YouTubers attract audiences in the hundreds of millions, the researchers estimated the median number of views for YouTube videos is just 41. 4% of videos have never been watched at all. About 74% of videos have zero comments. Around 89% have no likes. The median YouTube video is only 64 seconds long, and more than a third of videos are less than 33 seconds long.
