"The court’s 5–4 #CitizensUnited decision, allowing unlimited corporate, interest-group, & individual spending on elections, did trigger dire predictions... But even the most pessimistic among them fell short of imagining #American reality today."

#SCOTUS rejected a bid by 19 #Republican states led by Alabama to block 5 Democratic-led states from pursuing lawsuits accusing major #oil companies of deceiving the public about the role #FossilFuels have played in causing #ClimateChange.

The justices declined to hear a case filed directly w/the #SupremeCourt by Republican state AGs that took aim at cases brought in various state courts against companies including Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell & BP.

In Marbury v. Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall established the power of judicial review, which is not mentioned anywhere in the #Constitution. But judicial review in 1803 was not the doctrine of judicial supremacy it has come to mean. It was merely the power to resolve conflicting laws. Today, the #supremecourt claims to be the exclusive decider of constitutional meaning, above not just the states but also the other branches of the federal government. #law #scotus senatormoobs.substack.com/p/cr

#SCOTUS Justice #AmyConeyBarrett was among the justices who rejected the #Trump admin's attempt to avoid paying federal contractors as part of the gutting of the #USAID program.

"She is a rattled law professor with her head up her a**," said Mike Davis, who once worked for another #SupremeCourt justice, describing Justice Barrett as "weak & timid".
