Mysterious Lockheed Lodestar on some forbidden nocturnal grassland in Kansas. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I used a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors, illuminating the scene with warm white and red light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.

White Mojave Winter

In late January, it snowed in Pioneertown and elsewhere. The desert is so beautiful with a blanket of white snow. And elsewhere, that meant that Los Angeles got rain to help the firefighters battle the apocalyptic fires. To create this night photo, I lit the subject with a handheld flashlight while the camera shutter was open for a long time. This photo is near Pappy and Harriet's saloon.

Far from city lights, the Amazon rainforest reveals one of nature's most spectacular shows. Here, thousands of stars pierce the darkness with extraordinary clarity. The Milky Way stretches across the sky like a slithering serpent, a view that indigenous peoples have cherished for millennia.

Made another trip out to the mountains this past weekend. Capitalizing something extra what with missing too many opportunities for good skies last year.

Unfortunately I forgot to pay attention to moon phases, I was too tunnel visioned on atmospheric conditions, so the moon being out made it less clear to see the nebula, but getting some foreground context from the moon lighting up the mountain ranges was still cool.

And my car did not explode on the way home this time! Extra good thing there!

Ein Juwel im Universum ist die Feuerrad Galaxie M101 im Sternbild Großer Bär. Für mein Equipment eigentlich zu klein und lichtschwach.
Die Entfernung beträgt 21 Millionen (!) Lichtjahre!

That's a beautiful shot, especially being in color.

Do tell me, is this cheating? Not having the proper equipment for serious #StarPhotography, I make use of the publicly available #MicroObservatory. The Observatory makes available a half dozen 6" #Mak-Newts from different locations.

I can schedule and get raw b/w and R G B images. I then use software I've created to process and produce final results, like the #Andromeda photo below.
