There is something very compelling about: When We Were Real.

Despite the almost contemporary world, the speculative nature of the setting permeates every aspect of the novel. It is not just a veneer.

Daryl Gregory also made me care about every character and their struggle, even the annoying ones.

Henry Kuttner, born April 7, 1915, was a master of mid-20th century science fiction, often writing with his wife C.L. Moore. Among his finest solo works is Tomorrow and Tomorrow (1951), a mind-bending tale of alternate realities, scientific prophecy, and the manipulation of time and perception.

May Ri watched from Mars orbit as Herschel Crater got nuked, having failed to knock out all the missiles with her railgun. Her eldest daughter worked in the capitol, in the domed city situated in that crater. Had. She has nightmares of the flash and a mushroom cloud rising. Sort of like in the attached vid.
