A French press coffee pot and white porcelain mug sit on a dark wood table in front of a window (covered by a sheer curtain) and a wall. This is a monocrhome image with brown toning, and a hazy aspect overlays the entire image. (The image was produced entirely in-camera.)

Contentment

A square format color photograph of an evergreen tree which features prominently on the left side of the frame. The ground is a meadow covered with brown grass and snow. There is some brush around the tree, and in the far distance is another line of trees (the edge of a forest on the far side of a river which cannot be seen). The sky is blue and partially cloudy. The photo has a large white border, and has been treated with lowered contrast, subdued colors, a slight blur, and has a background texture that looks like art paper. The overall effect is something like that of a painting.

More or Less?

There's always a place for detailed, highly realistic photography, but what if one can say more by revealing less? Sometimes we need mystery. Room for curiosity. A little margin for a personal connection with the subject. An image that meets you where you are.

Silhouetted photo of a meadow and tree against a cloudy sky. The photo has been manipulated to show very little detail, reduced to only broad tones. It is a monochrome photo, with the sky hand-toned with a hint of blue, and the land and tree toned with a hint of brown. A very coarse grain has been added to the point where it looks like Pointilism. A paper texture has been added, and the edges of the image are feathered to white. The overall effect is similar to a Bromoil process print.

Modern color photography is amazing, but there's something about an autochrome that just leaps off the page. This 1915 portrait of an unidentified woman by Rudolph Dührkoop is a great example of the art.
