The idea is to keep it simple. Start with only one or two vegetables in your first season, then build up the range from there. This approach allows you to pay more attention to your plants initially without becoming bewildered by too much too soon. These few plants will get plenty of attention, just like a new romance, and will reward you with a good harvest of fruit. The following year you'll be [setting] up a bigger crop. Officially, they all suffered from tuberculosis, or complications thereof, and unofficially, they all died of grief for one another, but as I learned this week, apparently there was a very real and disturbing factor that contributed to their lifelong illnesses and early deaths: they spent their lives drinking water contaminated by the local graveyard and possibly the local privies, too…Well... it's still romantic in theory I suppose a family of young, brilliant novelists dies from drinking graveyard water, has anything been more Gothic—but in practice, I will spend today being grateful for modern plumbing.” — Emily Temple, LitHub, May 2021. A folk saint is one chosen by the people as opposed to those saints canonised by the Holy Roman church. Folk saints are not recognised by the Vatican but by the people who love them. Saint Expedite is known as the patron saint of rapid solutions. He is prayed to when a situation needs to be turned around, hurried along or changed. He is revered in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Latin America and is highly regarded in New Orleans, where he is considered to be a patron of the city…He is the unofficial saint of emergencies, businesses, shop keepers, examinees and basically anyone who needs a rapid solution! Barrett’s grandmother, of Brandon Creek, although a strict Primitive Methodist, always marked with a cross the top of one of the loaves she baked on Good Friday, Friday being her usual baking day. This loaf would be kept in a tin for twelve months in the belief that it would protect the family from want and hunger. On each Easter Sunday the loaf baked the preceding year was moistened with water, re-baked and eaten at tea-time. It was considered a privilege to be invited to share it and the person who received the slice bearing the arms of the cross could look forward to a year of prosperity. After tea the two end pieces of the loaf, which bore no part of the cross, were taken down to the river and thrown in to protect the neighbourhood from floods and storms during the next twelve months.” — Enid Porter, Cambridgeshire Customs and Folklore, 1969. So it is an unlucky flower to pick, for that would provoke a thunderstorm (it was actually called Thunderbolt in Staffordshire). To dream of anemones predicts love, though in Staffordshire it was reckoned unwise to take one anywhere near a wedding, for it would be bound to cause bad luck. This ill-luck nature is of some antiquity, for the Egyptians looked upon it as the emblem of sickness, and the Chinese call it the Flower of Death. This reputation is also quite widespread in Europe. The Romans, though, picked the first anemone as a charm against fever, and this idea still prevails in places.” — Donald Watts, Dictionary of Plant Lore (2007). An old proverb declares that she who wears lilacs will never wear a wedding ring, and to send a spray of lilac to a fiancé was a delicate way of asking that the engagement be broken. When they encountered the primordial deity Maam, whose name may be translated as “Grandfather” or “Ancient One,” they attempted to replace him with Saint Simon. Their plan backfired. Instead of the Mayan god fading discreetly into the identity of the saint, Maximón, as he became known, took on a whole new life and personality of his own: defiant, disobedient, sometimes profane, but always extremely powerful. In remarkable detail and with inimitable style they cover a diverse range of folkloric and demonological subject matter, from stereotypical pacts with the Devil to feasting under hills with the fairy king and queen. Arguably the most striking of all the passages in the confessions are those depicting elf-arrow shooting. They measured about 2-3/4" x 3-3/4". They came in a small black box which said "OBLIQUE STRATEGIES" on one of the top's long sides and "BRIAN ENO/PETER SCHMIDT" on the other side. The cards were solid black on one side, and had the aphorisms printed in a 10-point sans serif face on the other…The deck itself had its origins in the discovery by Brian Eno that both he and his friend Peter Schmidt (a British painter whose works grace the cover of "Evening Star"…) tended to keep a set of basic working principles which guided them through the kinds of moments of pressure - either working through a heavy painting session or watching the clock tick while you're running up a big buck studio bill. Both Schmidt and Eno realized that the pressures of time tended to steer them away from the ways of thinking they found most productive when the pressure was off.
