Mojo ♻️<p>New ATO data exposes the unfairness of our tax system: over 2,500 investors in Australia own 10 or more rental properties, receiving far greater benefits from negative gearing than everyday mum-and-dad investors. Before entering politics, he worked as a police officer and ran a family business. Since then, Dutton has acquired a notable property portfolio, including commercial and residential properties, valued in the millions. While his investments may not be illegal, his financial gains highlight how politicians can benefit from wealth accumulation, particularly through property markets.</p><p>Critics argue that Dutton's wealth growth is symbolic of a broader trend where politicians, through insider knowledge or favourable policies, can capitalise on opportunities that aren't as accessible to the general public. Additionally, as a senior figure in the Liberal Party, Dutton has had influence over policies that affect the property market, such as tax structures and negative gearing, which can benefit property investors like himself.</p><p>His property portfolio and financial success have raised questions about conflicts of interest and transparency, especially in a political climate where housing affordability is a pressing issue for many Australians.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/negativegearing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>negativegearing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/taxreform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>taxreform</span></a></p>

Mojo ♻️<p>Negative gearing, capital gains reforms unlikely to lead to major fall in property prices…. The journalist missed a critical point in this article. While the focus has been placed on potential rent increases and minimal impact on property prices, what isn’t being highlighted is the fact that we, as taxpayers, are already subsidising wealthy multiple property owners to the tune of $7 billion a year. It’s absurd that ordinary Australians are footing the bill for those who already hold significant wealth in real estate. If we’re serious about housing affordability and fairness, it’s time we stop propping up the property portfolios of the rich at the expense of the rest of us. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/negativegearing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>negativegearing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/housingcrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>housingcrisis</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/capitalgainstax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>capitalgainstax</span></a> <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-10-01/house-prices-rise-investors-negative-gearing-cgt-tax-policy/104414756" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2024-10-01/hou</span><span class="invisible">se-prices-rise-investors-negative-gearing-cgt-tax-policy/104414756</span></a></p>

Mojo ♻️<p>Negative gearing overwhelmingly benefits high earners, with those making over $180k a year taking nearly a quarter of the benefits, despite being just 5% of taxpayers. ATO data reveals that in 2021-2022, this group lowered their collective tax bill by $1.3bn through negative gearing—about 25% of all rental property losses claimed that year. But clearly, our ABC is more focused on representing the 5%, not the rest of Australians. <a href="https://aus.social/tags/NegativeGearing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NegativeGearing</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/TaxReform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TaxReform</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/FairnessInTax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FairnessInTax</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/ABC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ABC</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a></p><p><a href="https://amp.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/sep/27/how-the-most-affluent-australians-disproportionately-benefit-from-negative-gearing" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">amp.theguardian.com/australia-</span><span class="invisible">news/2024/sep/27/how-the-most-affluent-australians-disproportionately-benefit-from-negative-gearing</span></a></p>

Mojo ♻️<p>If an investor sells their property, that same property becomes available for purchase, likely to a new homeowner or another investor. Either way, it doesn't reduce the housing stock—it just shifts it from one owner to another. So, the argument that selling properties would lead to a reduction in rental stock doesn't hold. Also, it's worth considering that the publisher of this article earns 90% of its profits from property advertising.
