Overlooking an unusual "view" for Jacksonville, rarely can you see farther than a few feet in any direction with some type of obstruction ... trees, buildings, etc ... here, at the nature preserve you can look out over a vast wetland, with a mix of marsh reeds, tropical plants, waterways (on this visit, low tide), all under the big blue Florida sky.

the very last shot of my adventure ... after the 16 hour journey (by foot) to the preserve and exploring all the different areas, this view felt well earned

I rested here, enjoyed the view, and ate my packed lunch before turning around for the journey home.

Atop the hill is the location of the actual "column" ... similar to a miniature obelisk. The corners each have a large bronze historical marker affixed. Even more interesting is the highly unusual tree and rest bench behind.

Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve
Staking a Claim French explorer Jean Ribault claimed this area for France when he erected a column on the bank of the St. Johns River in 1562
During the sixteenth century, France was determined to expand its empire. Spain, the world's leading power, already had a foothold in the Americas, and France wanted a share of the riches the Spanish were gaining through trade and plunder. France's first attempt to stake a permanent claim in the present-day United States of America was at la Caroline.
Today the strategic importance of the St. Johns River is still apparent. From the monument you can look east to the mouth of the river and Mayport Naval Station. The port of Jacksonville is located to the west - evidence of the river's economic importance to residents of the area. As in the Sixteenth century, the waterways of the Timucuan Preserve sustain society in a variety of ways.

About half (.5) mile (.805 km) farther in the Saint Johns Bluff area is the Ribault Column portion of the Timucuan Nature & Ecological Preserve and National Park. Here a roadside sign directs visitors to the left.
