An Upstate New York #farmer is reeling from the increased cost of business amid President Donald Trump’s trade war with multiple countries.

Nicholas Gilbert, who tends 1,400 cows at his dairy farm in Potsdam, close to the Canada border, told The Atlantic that a recent order of #livestock feed cost him $2,200 extra due to tariffs. The feed came from Ontario, and he mistakenly believed his supplier at the Canadian mill would cover the difference.

Hungary confirms its fifth foot-and-mouth virus outbreak.

Hungary on Thursday confirmed a fifth outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) at a cattle farm in Rábapordány, near the Slovak border, escalating concerns over the spread of the highly contagious livestock virus first detected in the country last month.

From 12 April, the #UK Government has extended its ban on personal imports of meat and dairy from all #EU countries to prevent foot and mouth disease (FMD) reaching #British #livestock. Previously limited to four EU nations, the new rules now apply EU-wide and prohibit travellers from bringing items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured or raw meats, and milk into Great #Britain, regardless of packaging or duty-free status. Exemptions include small amounts of infant milk, medical foods, and some processed goods like chocolate or bread. Offenders risk fines up to £5,000. FMD poses no risk to humans but is highly contagious among livestock and threatens the UK's farming economy. There are no UK cases, but vigilance is urged, especially by animal keepers. Horses and pets aren't affected, but contaminated hay or straw is also restricted. These measures aim to protect biosecurity, food security, and farming livelihoods.

We are building #Open global consistent time-series data on #livestock dynamics (cattle, goats, sheep and horses) at 1-km annual for 2000-2022+ with uncertainty (prediction intervals). We used the correlation between census data (+50k census polygons) and large stack of environmental covariates to downscale sub-national livestock inventories (preprint at: doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-62019). The first outputs are now available for testing: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1493363. All code at: github.com/wri/global-pasture-

Bird flu detected in a sheep in England for first time.

The case, found in a sheep in Yorkshire after repeated milk tests, was identified “following routine surveillance” of livestock on a premises where avian influenza had been confirmed in captive birds.

There is no evidence of an increased risk to the UK’s livestock, but officials urge vigilance.
