My ★★★★★ review of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953) on #letterboxd: https://boxd.it/94vY4H
This evening's viewing distraction: a French comedy classic with Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (Monsieur Hulot's Holiday).
J'aime beaucoup Tati.

Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953, Tati)
"The presence of a very good actor is more visible in black and white, because one does not focus on anything other than his expressions, his gestures, and his voice."

Merk op dat de pijp van Tati was afgerukt.
For the 1978 cut of M. Hulot's Holiday — which is the definitive one we've been watching for decades — #JacquesTati shot an additional joke about the broken kayak because he saw #Jaws, then spliced it in.
Mr Hulot's holiday.
Please watch this awesome comedy.
Another Frédéric Viau-Davodeau on set picture find.
Filming the scene of the old couple going for a walk at night. It looks like the boat from the opening credits is lying in the foreground. Note the small child running up the stairs to the left. The movie must have seemed a magical time for the local kids and young actors.

Nice photo of the Rue Charcot showing the temporary structures built for the film.
The building to the right is the old café upon which will be built Hulot's false skylight structure.

(via my FB group I'd like to be part of the Mr Hulot universe, even as a cardboard cut out)

#NathaliePascaud's real name was/is Jacqueline Schillio and besides being a friend of a friend of #JacquesTati, she was a so called neophyte - a beginner.
Pascaud did act in one or two others movies after #mrhulotsholiday, so it seems.
Her husband received a role (Monsieur Schmutz) because Pascaud did not want to part from her husband during the filming of #LesVacancesdemonsieurHulot - and Tati did want her for the role.
