Nicole Sharp<p><strong>Ultra-Soft Solids Flow By Turning Inside Out</strong></p><p>Can a solid flow? What would that even look like? <a href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.134.058205" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Researchers explored</a> these questions with an ultra-soft gel (think 100,000 times softer than a gummy bear) pumped through a ring-shaped annular pipe. Despite its elasticity — that tendency to return to an original shape that distinguishes solids from fluids — the gel does flow. The furrows forming along the face of the gel are places where the gel is essentially turning itself inside out. <p>Since the gel alongside the pipe’s walls can’t slide due to friction, the gel flows by essentially turning itself inside out. Inner portions of the gel flow forward and then split off toward one of the walls as they reach the leading edge. This eversion builds up lots of internal stress in the gel, and furrowing — much like crumpling a sheet of paper — relieves that stress. That rim breaks into threads and then droplets, forming a well-known fishbone pattern as the Plateau-Rayleigh instability breaks up the flow. This poster shows a twist on that set-up: here, the two colliding jets vary slightly in their velocities. That variability adds a second instability to the system, visible as the wavy pattern on the central liquid sheet. The sheet’s rim still breaks apart in the usual fishbone pattern, but the growing waves in the center of the sheet eventually that structure apart as well. Nicole Sharp<p><strong>Jets, Shocks, and a Windblown Cavity</strong></p><p>As material collapses onto a protostar, these young stars often form stellar jets that point outward along their axis of rotation. Made up of plasma, these jets shoot into the surrounding material, their interactions creating bright parabolic cavities like the one seen here. This is half of LDN 1471; the protostar’s other jet and cavity are hidden by dust but presumably mirror the bright shape seen here. (The protostar itself is the bright spot at the parabola’s peak.) Although the cavity is visibly striated, it’s not currently known what causes this feature. Perhaps some form of magnetohydrodynamic instability? Nicole Sharp<p><strong>Growing Flexible Stalactites</strong></p><p>Icicles and stalactites grow little by little, each layer a testament to the object’s history. Here, researchers explore <a href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.198201" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">a similar phenomenon</a>, grown from a dripping liquid. They’re called “flexicles” in homage to their natural counterparts, and they start from a thin layer of elastomer liquid. Though it begins as a liquid, elastomer solidifies over time. </p> Timelapse video showing the formation of an initial layer of flexicles from a dripping elastomer. <p>To form flexicles, the researchers spread a layer of elastomer on an upside-down surface and allow gravity to do its thing (above). Thanks to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, the dense elastomer forms a pattern of drips that, after hardening, creates a pebbled surface. Subsequent layers of elastomer will drip from the same spots as before, slowly growing longer flexicles (below).
