@maiki Now that we're talking about it, I wonder if an #IndieWeb identity coupled with indieweb compatible forums is what I'm looking for. My indieweb site is "me", and I go to "places" to interact with people with common interests. If you're a close friend, you can go directly to my site and see everything, otherwise, we will just interact in the places where it makes sense. This would certainly help with "hyper local" interests (e.g. Portland topics will not be of general interest).
@maiki I agree that even federated media doesn't seem to further #IndieWeb goals, and it may run counter in preventing people from pursuing indieweb. Obviously, we can POSSE to federated places, but that's just treating the fediverse as another silo.
It seems like the trouble I have with these social platforms, federated or not, is whether I'm supposed to be me in all my multitudes. Or am I supposed to stay on topic?
Hi, I'm Neil. #introduction
Looking forward to learning from like-minded others and helping to grow this space. #SocialCoop
@dazinism @mayel Thanks for the warm welcome, dazinism. You've hit the nail on the head with how to persuade people to decentralise. The third #indieweb principle at https://indieweb.org/principles talks about this. I use #Known for this and #POSSE https://indieweb.org/POSSE to the silo sites like #Twitter I guess it's leading by example, and hoping some people come on the journey too. But many won't. (Bit like the 90s when many people stayed in their #AOL #Compuserve walled gardens!)
Hi, I'm just joined social.coop (having been over on mastodon.social for a few months), and intend this to be my main Mastodon instance. I'm keen on the #indieweb movement and co-operative principles (my first job leaving school was working for a co-op!). When I saw that like-minded people were already over here I decided to take the plunge myself, so here I am :) #introduction: https://raretrack.uk/2017/hi-im-just-joined-socialcoop-having-been-over-on-mastodonsocial
Just found out about social.coop via Michel Bauwens in the FB P2P group. This is excellent, it is excatly how we wrestle control back over our (online) lives. Excited to join and support! About myself: I'm a geek and entrepreneur, building #UBOS (http://ubos.net/), a Linux distro optimized for self-hosting and what I call "#Indie IoT" devices (instead of "overlord IoT" which is what everybody is selling). Also involved in #IndieWeb. Looking forward to collaborate!! #introduction
