in Wellington, New Zealand, the Downtown Community Ministry, which works with local homeless people, says the number of people rough sleeping in December 2024 was up by one-third compared to the year before. the criteria for getting emergency housing have been toughened so much that people “stopped asking”.

The Spinoff · Note to ministers: cutting services doesn’t make need go awayBy Max Rashbrooke

So, I've gotten to know some of the unhoused folks in #PortlandME. I listen to their stories when I'm protesting, and try to have a little something to hand out to them (money, warm gloves, healthy snack packs). It breaks my heart to see so many in need when there are empty spaces and even boarded up buildings downtown, and yet ritzy boutique shops everywhere! Someone can afford the high rents -- but it's not the people! I remember when one could rent an affordable studio apartment over a retail space. Not anymore! I couldn't afford to live there, and pretty much most of my friends have been pushed out because of gentrification. And now there is urban decay because of the empty spaces. Is it the 1980s again?!!

Here’s the article about that: www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03... #HousingForAll Homeless people have nowhere to go. What do people expect them to do? Get on boats and sail to Indonesia for asylum? Housing? Help? Australia: this is appalling. 😡 #HomesNow The issue is systemic poverty creation. #auspol

ABC News · Brisbane City Council to move on people sleeping in tents who refuse help despite concerns for safetyBy Kenji Sato

Stay tuned for a tale of disenfranchisement.

As I just reminded the group:
The system isn't "broken". It was built this way.

We need to remember that when we "fail" to jump through "enough" of the needless hoops to accomplish what we are NOT MEANT TO ACCOMPLISH.

in fact, we are MEANT TO NOT ACCOMPLISH thise tasks.
It is arcane, cruel, and INTENTIONAL.

You didn't fail to achieve that thing.
They absolutely did not intend for you to achieve it.

www.theguardian.com/australia-ne... Moreton Bay Council is now criminalising homelessness. Increasing rents and not enough income are not a fault of a person. Nobody chooses homelessness. They haven’t built enough affordable homes and now blame the victims. 😡 #HousingForAll #RaiseTheRate

The Guardian · Queensland council moves to evict homeless people from parks with public camping banBy Andrew Messenger

Tiny tiny homes guy was on Metro Morning. I listened happily until he said "We vet people carefully - *we want to help people who want to help themselves*, get their lives together." So that means he wants to leave 'unworthy' unhoused people out in the cold? 🥶
