@yantor3d @ascentale @meganL @InkySchwartz @bikenite I'm sure you could. Whether it would be functional, practical bicycle chain ... that's another question.
I've been wondering if there's a way to make a high-fashion dork disc. Something with a message or artistic pattern. I know it could be done with synchronized LEDs, but I wonder about the physics of having something passive that presented similar image possibilities.
A5. I read ages ago that London taxi drivers need to cycle around the city for two years before getting their license. Maybe we should look into a similar requirement for bus drivers.
Bus drivers in Japan are more courteous overall, but can still be divided into two groups: those that are aware of and extend courtesy to cyclists, and those that are / do not.
@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite
A5. I remember this being an issue.
Pleasantly surprised to find I trigger the proximity detectors of new cars -- I can see the flashing indicators in their side mirrors.
@gcvsa @ascentale @meganL @InkySchwartz @bikenite I bought chains, rear cassettes and brake pads when I heard they were in short supply during the early Covid years.
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite
A5. I remember arguing with my driver's ed teacher about this (and that was more decades ago than I care to admit!). If I'm on my bike and you're in a car, I know you're there. Doesn't matter if I've turned to look. Honking your freaking horn will only serve to startle me, with unpredictable results.
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite I guess that makes me an EFC (... Centimeter).
@MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite Following the tour (and I say this as someone who doesn't follow other sports, at all) is only interesting when there's good, useful, and entertaining commentary. And even then I still fall asleep watching it. (Stages typically kick off about 9 p.m. in my time zone, and I'm typically driniking.)
So yeah, if it's not your thing, no worries.
@nothingfuture @ascentale @PamelaSchure @bikenite Wow. I've taco'd a wheel (love that, I think of Pringles instead) and broken chains and spokes. I've never broken a frame. Something I should aspire to?
@nothingfuture @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite I find that keeping my Garmin on navigation (even on routes I know well) helps me keep my attention on the road rather than on the stats on my screen. Plenty of time to review those after the ride.
@nothingfuture @ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite *sigh*
Wit' ya. Working on changing that just as it becomes less likely I'll travel internationally with a bike (or at all).
@ascentale @PamelaSchure @bikenite
I once hopped onto my saddle and the carbon seat post snapped, jagged shards of carbon pointing upward . Luckily I fell sideways and avoided painful repair surgery. Phew! #bikenite
@artemesia @ascentale @bikenite A4: at the risk of tooting my own betootler :)
If you want to get serious a two rear wheel trike or quad towing a four wheel trailer is very doable. With electric assist it could be manageable for a normal cyclist.
@ascentale @gcvsa@mstdn.plus @bikenite the "Lamb Chopper" is a rider-in-front design that's much more stable than a cart axle ice cream trike. Probably harder to find but if you're building/having it built no harder to do.
Obviously if you're in Australia ask Ben and ...
@ascentale @pete @bikenite A6: I do the Buddhist parable/joke version: I ride my bike to ride my bike.
I'm really enjoying the way gravel bikers are pushing for new and better day/weekend rides near the city. Makes it much easier to take off for a weekend and just ride without having the whole journey of discovery experience.
I'd like to do the Lithgow rail trail(s) again. But next weekend, not right now :)
@ascentale Thank. you again for hosting Phil. I appreciate your work and time very much! #Bikenite
@ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite A8: I have tried track/velodrome racing and did not enjoy it. Very did not. Once was ample. Somewhat relatedly, road riding in a peleton is not for me, there's too much dependence on other people to do the right thing/it's high risk, and competitively there's lots of arseholes.
@ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite A8. I dont know that I "dislike" any specific type of cycling. But I am only really interested in touring or utility or journey cycling for myself. No interest in competing (no racing) or daredevil rides (mountain, racing, cyclocross, unicycle etc). #Bikenite.
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite. A7. I record km ridden in a book after each ride. It is a motivator for me to be consistent. #Bikenite
@ascentale @pete @bikenite Route Verte (Quebec). Anywhere in the Netherlands. On the Okanagan Rail Trail (Okanagan valley in British Columbia). Galloping Goose in Victoria, BC. Anywhere with a safe(r) longer distance ride. #Bikenite.
