Sauron hidden in plain sight in #Bergen? No, it is just Slettebakken Church.

Opened in 1970, it is a concrete construction with a fan-shaped copper roof, and a glass slit that lets daylight in to the main room. The "AD ASTRA" plan by architect Tore Sveram was apparently met with skepticism by the municipality, but loved by the congregation, and still stands as a striking landmark by Tveitevannet in Bergen.

Behovet for bilbelte-i-buss er vanskelig å forklare: i Oslo har vi ståplasser i busser som kjører i 80-sone og de er ofte fulle samtidig som det er betydelig biltrafikkk.
I Vestland har de vel knapt slike busser, og det kommer oppfordring til alle om å spenne seg fast med sikkerhetsbelte. . Men altså, nå har jeg bodd 5+ år i Oslo, og kan ikke komme på en eneste historie om en ulykke med buss der belte ville hjelpe…

We're hiring PhD students – again!

Ilona Heldal has an open PhD research fellow position (3 years) in the Norwegian Research Council funded project «Ensuring a Competent and sustainable workforce of Midwives in Norway (CompMid)».

The topic stands out a bit, doesn't it?

This doctoral project will focus on how technology can improve learning for midwifery students and practising midwives. We therefore recruit a PhD student for developing learning tool technologies, such as VR, AI-based learning tools or Live-action team-based games, for supporting student-active learning of one or more specific clinical skills. The project will design, develop and evaluate digital learning tools to improve midwives’ and midwife students’ clinical competence. The project will involve two PhD-students who will collaborate closely, one in computer science and one in midwifery science. The PhD in computer scinence will focus on software engineering with research focus on software technologies or human computer interaction techniques for clinical learning tools. The PhD in midwifery science will have a focus on the pedagogical and clinical content of the learning tools.

Fosswinckels gate. To locals today, this is the street basketball court of St. Paul School, next to the social sciences faculty. Back then it was Ulrike Pihl School for girls.

Ulrike Pihl was orphaned early and was sent to England for schooling in arts and education. Beginning as a governess and an arts teacher, she later took over a girl's school from her uncle in 1865, and – considered radical at that point – introduced the girls to physical education in addition to the teachings and bildung more normal at girl's schools at the time.

Pihl ran the school until 1881, and kept on as a teacher until the 1890s, before she died in 1917.

In #Bergen today, glorious weather, and we're now staying overnight in the city on this #cruise. Walked to the aquarium and now we're in Apollon Platebar, which is both a #vinyl record store and craft ale bar with 40+ taps. We might be a while. Started on an amber ale and a cider; both very good. We do plan to peruse the albums too.

Hello, hello, hello – I moustache you a question!

Rasmus Løvik was a police officer in #Bergen from 1876-1911. Was considered at a point for a transfer to somewhere else in Norway, which was met with protests from people in the Nøstet area where he patrolled.

Viimeisin Not Just Bikes -video on jälleen kerran osoitus siitä, että kun rakennat ympäristöä ihmisille, saat ihmisiä.

Bergen on varsin tyypillinen eurooppalainen kaupunki, joka monella tapaa tuhottiin 60-luvun autohuumassa. Kaupunki on kuitenkin ottanut hienoja askeleita oikeaan suuntaan ja korjannut vuosikymmenten takaisia virheitä.

Upea pyöräily- ja jalankulkutunneli on vain yksi osa kaupungin kehittymistä (ja videota). En ole koskaan käynyt Bergenissä, mutta ihan jo pelkästään tämän videon perusteella päätin, että joskus siellä on käytävä. Vaikka 60-luvun autoilusekopäisyyden arvet näkyvät yhä, Bergen vaikuttaa varsin viihtyisältä paikalta, joka on kehittymässä hienoon suuntaan!
