@NanoRaptor @sendai not as cursed as many people think...
Espechally @snazzyq who has a #ModBook & #ModBookX and me who has to #Hackintosh my #X230tablet one day...
@eri even for a #Laptop or #Tablet I consider the #FrameworkDesktop a total "#WontBuy!" on my end, as it has less #Upgradeability and #Repiarability than a #Lenovo #X230Tablet or #Fairphone #FP3plus, mich less anything I consider "#Desktop" hardware.
It's really sad when #DIYperks put in more effort than an entire company at designing a Desktop!
@radmin @tera @critakitty yeah, @frameworkcomputer refusing to make a #TrackPoint keyboard is kinda sad.
Not to mention this isn't unique to even #ThinkPad or #hp #ProBook or #Dell #Latitude & #Getac devices, but even #Sony (#Vaio #P11Z) and #GPD did so...
@bastetfurry @janet_catcus the only thing cooler would be if they did a #transparent version, but I also know why they didn't and instead chose said muted colour pallet: As those are easily sourceable, child-safe (if not medical- or food-grade), and available as recycling plastics. Also said colours don't directly show ABS's yellowing under sunlight that distinctively.
Keeping costs down, compared to the high prices of optically clear, non-discoloured plastic ehich also tends to be more brittle, and also may not be an option due to the way they pulled a "#ThinkPadnium" style metal reinforcement of the chassis, as they clearly worked out a mix of elastic deformation (TPU), lightweight flexing and stiffening is the way to make a machine that is more forgiving in terms of abuse without designing it to be an unwieldy, heavy industrial appliance.
So yeah, I do want to see @frameworkcomputer release the #Framework12 and maybe some compact #Desktop case that is essentially allowing to shove a Framework 12 or #Framework13 mainboard and keyboard in and have a low-footprint unit like the #RaspberryPi #Pi400 & #Pi500 units. Or just some case one can bolt onto #VESA mounts at a screen (similar to a #ThinkStation Tiny / #ThinkCentre Tiny) and use those for #Classrooms.
I hope they have some nice #Stylus slot & lanyard option similar to the #X230Tablet I still daily-drive today.
What's the deal with #Linux (specifically, #Debian) and #multimonitor setups (specifically, with #ThinkPad and #DisplayPort)?
I have an #X230Tablet with a monitor (VGA) and an e-ink screen (HDMI over DisplayPort) in addition to its in-built screen, but I can only use two of them at a time. The third one just remains blank, and whichever it is, only starts working when I disable one of the other two ️
Is this a general thing or just a "me and my laptop" thing?
@itsfoss daily user of an #X230Tablet here: I do confirm this as true!
@lindsays @dragonarchitect
Really?
But then again my recommendatio for #Wacom is just my experience as #Sysadmin and someone who equipped #CreativeProfessionals and daily-drives an #X230Tablet, so I'm biased due to 15+ years of experience with Wacom.
It's just that I have my plugs and have even setup some fancy stuff like 27" Cintiq Pros on free-floating arms so people can tilty-swively them however they feel ike with their setup...
I always recommend people to try out said devices if possible. Maybe you'll find it to work out fine or be useless...
And yes, I remember the golden days of #ThinkPad|s being #Surplus'd dirt-cheap...
Like sometimes €50 for an #X230Tablet (base config w/o HDD/SSD but it's caddy!)...
@ustralien Granted, @frameworkcomputer makes it super easy to #replace as they use one single #Torx bit and document their stuff and actually sell you the parts unlike #Apple...
They could've done it like #Lenovo did with some #ThinkPads and include a smaller internal battery so people don't have to shut-down to swap, or like #ToughBooks and even some old #PowerBooks just have more than one slot for a #battery to get chugged in.
Cuz the #DRM on Lenovo's devices prevent 3rd parties from building some once Lenovo decides to not give a shit anymore...
What really pisses me off is that everyone thinks @frameworkcomputer and #Fairphone are glorious, when in fact even #Framework13 & #Fairphone4 / #Fairphone5 are objectively #Downgrade|s compared to what I'm currently using: [ #ThinkPad #X230Tablet & #Fairphone3plus ]
The newer Fairphones don't have real #DualSIM and instead of a 2nd SIM Slot a shitty #eSIM and removed the #HeadphoneJack for no valid reason!
#Framework doesn't have #ToolfreeSwappable #Batteries so having more #offgrid range isn't done by a quick swap on the go.
@AdamStuartSmith @mike @Gargron Yeah, I had to zoom out to 70% just to make it fit on my #X230Tablet with a 1366x768px screen...
@fuchsiii yeah, Lenovo didn't let you buy the #ThinkPad25 when you were like "#ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney!"...
I hope @frameworkcomputer will make a #Trackpoint + Keyboard top cover for the #Framework13 because that would be the final nail that would get me to retire my #X230Tablet...
@OpenComputeDesign same with many other things.
#GluedInBatteries instead of #ToolfreeSwappableBatteries are just an #excuse for #AntiRepairDesign. points at #Vaio #P11Z & #Fairphone #FP3plus
#SolderedDownRAM & #SolderedDownSSDs were never valid outside #EmbeddedDevices that need to survive harsh envoirments. points at a rugged, ATEX-certified PTT radio for industrial plants
#Repairability saves lives! points at Medical Devices
Want to have more #battery #runtime? We have solutions for that for decades. points at #EeePC and a tool-free, swappable, #aftermarket, high-capavity battery
Personally I'm so pissed off amidst the ongoing #Enshittification that I really need to get the #NUCbook off the ground before my #X230tablet dies.
https://github.com/KBtechnologies/NUCbook
@topher @nekohayo you ain't the only one using old stuff...
I still use my #X230Tablet with it's i5-3320M + HD4000 iGPU and 1366*768px screen as my main system to this day...
@rl_dane basically:
All existing #Laptops on the #market are IMHO a #Downgrade from my #X230Tablet ( @frameworkcomputer are the "least worst" by a long shot tho! ) and I do want some essential features that I see as non-negotiable, like tool-free hot-swappable batteries but since noone does that and I don't want to rely on proprietary form factor boards (#Framework's boards are proprietary!), I want to literally just take a #UCFF aka. #NUC form factor mainboard and put it in a case with the necessary parts to make it work mobile...
@alina yeah, depends...
Personally, I'm still rocking a #X230Tablet so even a #StramDeck is "an upgrade"... lol.
@selzero I can recommend #wacom both as #user and #SystemsIntegrator:
As "#expensive" as they may seem, their stuff just works out of the box, has excellent quality and gets excellent support in terms of #drivers & #Software support...
I daily drive my #X230Tablet and that is essentially using a #Wacom #Stylus and #Touchscreen combo.
I have also tried out the Wacom 13 Pro when it was new and have often setup systems with Chitiq Tablet PCs and Drawing Screens and they are just gorgeous to look and a breeze to work on - regardless if #creative or #engineering workflows...
You may even find some cheap #used / #refurbished #wacom devices of your choice in your area's most prolific #UsedMarket|s...
@arrrg I tend to disagee...
Shure you can make the argument towards #TechIlliterates that they don't know better, but it's our failure as #TechLiterates to not just #preach and #demand #RepairableTech, but oftentimes people don't follow up their demands with actual purchase decisions.
In #capitalism, the #users and #consumers do have #choices and they can decide to #unionize and collectively #refuse to buy or use garbage.
#WhatYouAllowIsWhatWillContinue applies to everything and this we need to demand and force change by all means necessary to do so.
OFC please do go ahead and choose #UnauthorizedRepair to keep your gear up and running as long as feasible anyway - just like I'll not toss out my still working #X230Tablet for a #Framework13 unless I literally have no other choice...
@dlupham @deliri @thamesynne you can - I daily drive an #ThinkPad #X230Tablet and it just works out of the box, including pen and touch input!
@Cyb3rrunn3r ich bin jedenfalls kein #RGB-Mensch...
zeigt auf ne hp #Z600, nen #DarkBase600 und #X230Tablet
