hat tip to @toddlyons for the link. I wanted to add a comment to this excellent run down of the OGL and the industry. However, it gets one point wrong.

"But, there’s a reason that Creative Commons hasn’t caught on further: you have to either be committed to releasing your entire content into the Creative Comments ... or you have to carefully construct an SRD for each publication so that you only release certain content"

This is false. And this falsehood seems to have spread far and wide like an ear worm. To clarify, you can specify what is and is not under the license. It is your work, you can delineate it however you want.

I spent a lot of time in the 10s going through what I like to call "The OGL Library of Lost Librams". There were quite a few published rules that have just disappeared in a certain sense of the word. Concentrating on just some MMO rpgs that came out in the 00s. All of these used the OGL. But when I got around to seeing if I could make a SRD implementation of them, it reinforced my stance that the OGL is a terrible license. Almost useless.

Each of these books has statements about what is Product Identity. (See image 4). You can not reasonably be expected to read the Product Identity clause of these license statements and make the "correct" judgement about what you can and can not use. I even consulted with a lawyer (old friend of mine) about the various product identity statements and he said some of it would be open to interpretation. Therefore, the OGL is terrible. It does not solve the problem of what you can and can not use. You are walking into legally shaky ground if you just use your judgement to start using things in these books.

Something I think is not discussed enough is even though WotC backed off on OGL 1.1, the older OGL 1 is still a deeply flawed license. The issue of "can it be updated by a newer version" was never settled.

After the whole #OGL fiasco, I decided to move my attention from #DnD 5E to #Pathfinder 2E. I haven't had the opportunity to play around with it much, but so far I like what I see.

However, I do like the "bounded accuracy" concept of D&D5E - and the notion that large numbers of low-level enemies can take down a more powerful foe. In contrast, with Pathfinder 2E its flat level bonus to most stats mean that powerful characters and creatures become pretty much invulnerable to lower-level foes, and I am not sure how to feel about that.

a tactical CRPG like Solasta: Crown of the Magister being based on the SRD 5.1 open game content has got me imagining other video game adaptaions based on open game rules. most obviously something like a CRPG based on Labyrinth Lord, Old Scool Essentials or some similar OSR ruleset. or one based on Chaosium's Basic Roleplaying SRD. or perhaps even one based on the Traveller SRD or Crpheus Engine. i can dream. #TRPG #OGL #OpenSource #VideoGames #CRPG #Gaming #Games #OSR #TabletopGaming

In re the #Jorphdan thing: One of the themes in my writing on the #OGL (gsllcblog.com/2020/04/11/stats) is that it all seems like a set up. That #WotC *implies* that you can do a thing, but because it's technically a #copyright violation, and their statement was merely an implication, they're reserving the right to go after you if you do something else that's perfectly #legal but they don't like. They're constantly proving me right.
