'In a process that will be familiar to those with side hustles, the postboxes can be used to drop off packages that have barcoded postage. Once customers have scanned their code – the postbox’s batteries store energy to power its scanner when there is no sun – the drawer on the front opens. They can then use the Royal Mail app to request “proof of posting”.'

The Guardian · Royal Mail trials postbox with parcel hatch, solar panels and barcode scannerBy Zoe Wood

I just want to put out there that there are real strong virtues to writing letters and sending greeting cards that aren’t necessary “present” in emails.

• They get you off line.

• They help you craft thoughts carefully and purposefully in ways email can’t because you have to manually write it without “deleting” it.

• They’re fun to receive.

• They physically exist and will continue to do so if collected and cared for even after you’re dead.

• They can be pretty if that’s your intent.

• They’re more personal and meaningful than email because you took the time to engage in the process of penmanship on paper instead of typing it out.

I highly suggest trying the art of correspondence someday. Because it can be just that if you let it. Try unplugging and decompressing with a nice pot of tea and your favorite pen & stationery. Try contemplating a rough outline of what you want to say or include. Then simplify.

Maybe do some fun doodling on the paper. Make it an extension of yourself that you’re sharing.

Enjoy it.

So to test this out, i put my phone in low power mode. Since i don’t do that often, i got this warning. It says “mail fetch…is disabled” which i expect for BACKGROUND fetching. But if I’m in the mail app asking it to check my mail right now, I don’t see why it should refuse. It will play audio books, videos, and many things that take more power than IMAP when it is in low power mode. That’s so bizarre.

In an interview with Slate,
Wendy Weiser,
a leading expert on democratic rights at the Brennan Center for Justice,
estimated that
❌up to 21.3 million people could be disenfranchised by the SAVE Act,
which “would also
💥completely upend voter registration[,]
💥end mail registration[,]
💥end voter registration drives[,]
💥end online registration,
💥and make it much harder to do automatic voter registration,”
she warned.

The SAVE Act’s passage would enormously
🔥disenfranchise citizens without passports,
as well as
🔥“rural voters, voters with disabilities, older voters,”
and other vulnerable people who are
“going to face special burden,” Weiser said.

Similar problems would occur should #mail-in #voting be dismantled
-- the practice has been a particular target of Republicans.

Now -- making use of fringe legal interpretations
and building upon an unorthodox Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision,
-- the Trump administration hopes to ❌establish the precedent that ballots received after Election Day are invalid.

As Diaz commented,
“Egregiously, the executive order tries to
override state laws in 17 states.”

Local laws ensure that late-arriving ballots are counted,
as long as they’re postmarked before Election Day.

Diaz points out that barring this method is also going to ⚠️disenfranchise overseas service members
who very commonly vote by mail.

And internationally mailing proof of citizenship documents is not a safe or viable practice.

“All the policies that are in [the order],” Diaz said,
“are things that individual states have tried before
— and they’ve all been disastrous.”

For instance,
proof of citizenship requirements in Kansas and Arizona
necessitated a vast administrative burden to review documents.

Those laws also faced a bevy of challenges.

After years of litigation,
Kansas’s rule was struck down.

“They got sued, and they lost,” said Diaz.

But in the meantime, the rule “ended up preventing tens of thousands of eligible American citizens from registering to vote.”
