#WritersCoffeeClub 1. April Fool’s Day! Do you include in-jokes, hidden messages, or “easter eggs” in your writing?
I include references, sometimes obscure. They could be considered hidden messages. I also include Japanese language puns, which are lost on my English readers and are probably stupidly simple for Japanese language readers. I know there is a puzzle and hidden message in vol. 1 of my WIP, but even I can’t code it any more.
The references are at the level of mentioning the “Red Room.” David Lynch fans would recognize that. Or a tidbit that harks back to the Alice in Wonderland books or Wizard of Oz movie. For instance, in one scene, gecko shapeshifters start running in circles follow a rat with a long tail. At another point, Ume sings a parody of “We Off to See the Wizard.”

I have just introduced two human(ish) antags to my WIP. (Vol. 4 still aways from release) They don't yet have that level of detail but this is a good place to start thinking about it. (All answers are alpha quality)
Kawakami-sensei (川上先生:): Reads political therory and esoteric shinto tracts.
Takayisha-tenno (滝夜叉天皇): Enjoys feeding her frog familar and reading poetry beside her koa pond.
Mikawa-san: This is a meanless concept to apply to her.

#WordWeavers 30. What do your characters get nostalgic about? What triggers that?
#KonbiniIdol Both Ume and Tomo sometimes get nostalgic about when their relationship was new. Street fairs, idol shows, dumping beer on each other. Back when things were simpler when there were no cults, ghost, or other youkai interfering with them. Tomo might go back if he could, but Ume has Shishi now and there is no going back.
What triggers it? Reminders of their past: Mementos, bits of conversation, dreams, looking at each other.
#MyGirlFriend None of the character are nostalgic. Shiro is the only one with a past that isn’t totally messed up and even she wouldn’t want to go back.

#WordWeavers 27. What small precious memento does a character keep on their person? What makes it precious? Part 2
There are some things that almost fit this description.
Tomo has a cracked picture of him and Ume at an anime street fair. It was one of the few things he rescued when cultists tashed his home.
He also has a bullet cartridge that almost hit him. Instead, lodged in his pack. He intends to get it inscribed with his name as a protective talisman. (The bullet with your name on it. My beta reader didn't understand.)
Shiomi should buy Ume something. It's the kind of thing she would do, and Ume would be sure to carry it. Poor Ume is dense that way, or she would buy Shiomi something like that. There is no "probably" about whether she would carry it.

Now that she has it back, Shiomi has a heart-shaped silver brooch set with amethyst that Maiyoi-chan given to her. It dates to the Tempo Famine. And is an important plot device in volume three.
No one else, to my knowledge, carries anything that fits that description.

Tomo: "Ume is impulsive. For example one night he found a drunk woman needing help and brought her home. No concern that she was cursed or how it would affect our lives. Then a few days later takes off in the middle of the night to drive her to her aunt's. But doesn't make it and returns here with her."
Shiomi: "Sorry."
Tomo: "Not your fault."

I like having an excuse of scream "shini, shini, shini, die, die, die."
I can be very childish.

Basement. She is good at running away. No basement though, it would be the best hiding place she can find quickly. Once there she would chant protective mantras, which might very well help.

Saitama-Tokyo Hybrid accent. Tends to fanciful speech, heavy on description. She has a large rich vocabulary which she salts with metaphors and movie references. Doesn’t swear and is generally polite using formal suffixes for people’s names. She uses informal and slang speach. She has stated that she occasionally lapses into “male” word choices. Which is a Japanese thing.
Tomo has at various times described her speech as fanciful, purple, or florid.
Shiomi: Describes her voice as a sexy husky smoker's voice. Which is the only time this is described.
Ume words: Yeap, smokes (For cigarettes), Frick, Jeez
(I know my characters very well.)
